- Day Shift Description: JOB SUMMARY The Board Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) in the Pre
- Anesthesia Testing Department functions in collaboration with and under the guidelines established by the Department of Anesthesia and Department of Surgery at St. Mary Mercy Hospital (SMMH). The NP/PA assesses the patient’s physical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual preparation for the surgical experience. Interview and assessment techniques are used to identify potential or actual problems. Education and interventions are initiated to optimize positive outcomes for the surgical patient. The NP/PA completes pre-surgical patients health histories including identification of psychological, physical, spiritual, emotional and learning needs of the patient. Completes physical exams and orders preoperative testing according to anesthesia guidelines in collaboration with the Chairman of Anesthesia, the Chairman of Surgery, and according to the scope of Michigan Nurse Practice Act and approved SMMH policies and procedures. Conducts and documents individual patient assessment in collaboration with appropriate health care professionals. PERFORMANCE DUTIES Reviews existing diagnostic results and clearances. Completes patient work-up including patient history and physical exam. Orders appropriate diagnostic testing. Reviews existing diagnostic results and clearances. Follows-up with referring surgeon regarding significant physical findings that may potentially delay or cancel the surgical procedure. Collaborates with Anesthesia as necessary to safely address risk factors for anesthesia and/or surgery.
