Job Function
Involves the provision of integrated and accessible primary and specialty patient care services in a clinic or center environment. Care is provided by clinicians and assistants who are accountable for addressing a large majority of personal health care needs and developing a sustainable partnership with patients. Ensures optimal patient outcomes through effective leadership and / or provision of patient care delivery in healthcare clinics or centers.
Promotes shared decision-making at all levels to ensure a shared voice in practices, exchange of ideas, enhanced communication, and continually improved patient services. Management levels may also be responsible for clinic operations. (Note, for only clinic operations, see Ambulatory Administration job function.) Under general supervision of the Associate Clinical Director and guided by the procedures of the Medical Center, Ambulatory Services and the Cancer Center, the Assistant Nurse Manager ensure the quality of patient care in practice of Adult Cancer Center and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice.
This position is responsible for assisting the Clinical Director with all aspects of the operation, including but not limited to 1) recruiting, selecting, hiring and training staff, coaching and counseling, and completion of performance evaluations 2) assuring compliance with all regulatory and patient safety goals, 3) developing and implementing policies and procedures that assure a high level of quality care, 4) supports performance improvement initiatives and 5) maintains close working relationship with other departments to ensure alignment of goals that meet patient safety and service standards, 6) supports leadership/management team cross-coverage needs.
This position supports the Clinical Director in supervising all clinical staff of the practice clinic, facilitating positive interaction among staff, patients, and other departments. This position assumes full responsibility for the unit in the areas delegated and in the absence of the Associate Clinical Director. Key Responsibilities % of time Essential Function (Yes/No ) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 20 Supervises and facilitates the flow of patient care activities and coordination of the interdisciplinary clinical staff for assigned clinics / centers.
Assures quality care, and compliance with internal policy, external regulations and accepted practices across the continuum of care. Understands unit financial goals and educates staff of cost-containment strategies. Maintains unit expenses within budget. 20 Supervises the quality of employees meeting patient service standards and coordinates the clinic patient care services, resolves system issues and escalated issues, advises on work methods, manages scheduling based on patient census.
Advocates on behalf of the practice area and represents area on task forces or committees. 24 Proficiently, safely and efficiently functions in the practice area as a RN to support floor staff needs 5 Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline and staff development in collaboration with the Nurse Manager/Assoc Director and Practice Manager. Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, disciplinary actions, performance ratings, and other human resources matters. 5 Assures completion of orientation and training of all patient care staff.
Identifies and implements department specific educational opportunities for staff in collaboration with ambulatory administration. Assure work is performed in adherence to patient service standards, internal policies, external regulations and quality / quantity expectations. Evaluates the competencies of clinical staff, according to scope of practice for the position. 8 Keeps abreast of and Implements new or changing patient care standards of practice, scope of practice, competency development and assessment, policies and procedures and new programs.
Collaborates with physicians and clinical Director to develop proposals for improvements to clinic services, policies or procedures. Serves as a resource to Clinic Staff / Directors on patient care issues, new policies, and technology. Keeps staff informed of change.
Recommends internal policies and procedures for quality improvement within the practice(s). 8 Participates in the performance of routine audits and accreditation and licensing inspection readiness activities. Monitors services provided by support departments and collaborates to improve utilization and efficiency. 5 Develops a strong culture of teamwork to ensure the quality of daily operations, effective interdepartmental collaborations, and the timely achievement of objectives.
Communicates regularly with management on practice activities and on pertinent operational or human resources issues. 5 Encourages and assists staff in meeting professional goals. Using standard practice evaluation tools to identify areas for growth. Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise clinicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic(s) / center(s). Strong knowledge of practice operations. In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions. Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants and outside agencies. Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives. Proven ability to organize, manage multiple priorities, and delegate work functions efficiently.
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and self-development within the field of nursing and nursing administration.
Master’s degree A minimum of 3 years in an ambulatory oncology setting. 2 years supervisory or demonstrated leadership experience Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters. Experience using EPIC EMR systems Experience with QA/The Joint Commission process for quality improvement Knowledge of current and emerging best practices and technologies in the clinic / center healthcare industry.
ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card, OCN or other related certification Education/Certifications: Registered Nurse in the State of California Bachelor's degree in Nursing American Heart Association CPR certification
