Supervised by a OB/GYN. Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses who provide comprehensive healthcare to women throughout their lifespan, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and reproductive health. CNMs manage low to moderate risk pregnancies, provide well-woman and gynecologic care, and collaborate with OB/GYN physicians and the healthcare team to ensure safe, high-quality, patient-centered outcomes.
CNMs practice in accordance with national standards established by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB), and California state law. Instructs, educates and counsels patients regarding matters relating to their physical and mental health/disease management. Recognizes and evaluates situations that require the attention of the supervising physician and communicates his/her assessments with that physician to facilitate the care of the patient and transfer of the patient’s care required. Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
Provides on-site evaluation, treatment and coordination of care. Performs any other duties or responsibilities assigned. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities relating to his/her practice.
Performs tasks or functions which fall within the customary scope of the advanced practice of nursing. Provides medical functions as identified by Standardized Procedures and approved Protocols, consistent with the scope of practice outlined by the California Nurse Practice Act. Works in collaboration with and under the direction of supervising physician(s).
Ability to function unsupervised. Ability to work as a Team. Recognize and respond appropriately to obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
Utilize evidence-based guidelines to support quality and safety in midwifery practice. Ability to have positive personal interactions with co-workers, patients and their families. Position
Master’s degree (MSN) or higher in Nurse Midwifery from an ACME-accredited program. Licenses/Certifications: Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license and Current California Nurse-Midwife certification issued by the Board of Registered Nursing. Current certification as a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) Certification: Current BLS, NRP, DEA certification required.
Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced preferred) Skilled/Ability Demonstrates critical thinking and clinical judgment in maternal and newborn care. Excellent communication, counseling, and patient education skills. Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Proficient in EHR use and documentation standards. Maintains professional accountability and ethical standards in all aspects of care.
