Shift / Hours:Monday - Thursday, 8:30pm - 7:00amGeneral Purpose of Job:The surgical first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In Addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.

Provide skillful use of the surgical instruments in consistence with the purpose they were designed. Applies knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures. Assists with positioning, prepping and draping according to procedure, patient size and surgeons preference.

Maintains a safe environment for the patient, physician and staff at sterile field, as well as throughout the OR. Sets up room appropriately for procedureTakes into account size of patient in selection of supplies, equipmentBreaks down room after procedure utilizing standard precautionsAssists surgical team before, during and after surgical intervention, including cleanup and getting patients when needed. Assists in maintenance, care and cleanliness of department, supplies, equipment, and instruments.

Handles instruments, equipment in a manner that minimizes breakage, damageReports damage, breakage and removes item from usage. Transports instruments back to decontamination in closed carts following cases. Is knowledgeable of process improvement activities in unit and assists as requestedParticipates in staff meeting on a routine basisUtilizes self-directed learning activities to maintain competency and above.

Education and/or

Successful completion of accredited Surgical Technology First Assist Program or equivalentHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED)Pediatric scrub tech experience preferredCertificates, Licenses, Registrations:Completion of an approved Surgical Technician First Assistant Program (CSFA)Credentialed as a certified Surgical Assistant Certified as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) CPR certified.
