Job Summary Summary ED: The Unit Service Technician provides a broad range of care and services to patients, including but not to limited to EKG, phlebotomy, equipment cleaning, and stocking of rooms under the supervision of a licensed nurse. They perform a wide range of secretarial duties, including but not limited to organizing paperwork, answering the phone, paging, and receiving of Emergency Department patients into the medi-tech computer system. They will provide safe accurate transportation of patients throughout the hospital. They will perform 1:1 sitting when necessary. The Unit Service Technician of the Emergency Department will also assure the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. 1. PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
- Anticipates and identifies patient safety risks in cooperation with licensed nurse and take appropriate action.
- Follows and maintains restraint policies under supervision of licensed nurse. Checks with nurse before utilizing or removing any restraints.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics in moving and assisting patients to prevent personal injury.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the location of emergency equipment. 2. ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS
- Receives visitors to the ICU in a professional manner, projecting a positive public image.

- Assists nursing and secretarial staff to provide support to ensure efficient and confidential flow of information.
- Communicates patient information to licensed nurse in a timely manner, i.e.,change in patient condition such as loss of consciousness, abnormal vital signs, falls, complaints of pain or any unusual event.
- Answers patient call lights, telephone and screen calls in a courteous manner. Relays accurate messages to appropriate personnel.
- Prioritizes duties to ensure efficient operation of the ICU.

- Delivers specimens to laboratory as needed, following proper procedures related to the handling of specimens during transport, as requested by staff. 6. PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION

- Identifies and communicates quality issues to Nurse Director/Clinical leader. 9. PATIENT CARE
- Provides basic nursing care to patients including bathing, shaving, mouth care, peril-care, and linen changes as directed and requested by licensed nursing staff. Maintains standard precautions in delivery of care.
- Takes vital signs, completes intake and outtake data, and daily weights as directed and requested by the licensed nursing staff.
- Responds to all patient call lights in a timely manner.
- Understands and utilizes body substance isolation.
- Provides technical support for the ICU licensed nurse staff by performing tasks which may include, but not limited to: EKG, Phlebotomy, Accucheck, 02 Sat, simple dressings-by request and under the direction of the RN.

Recognizes and notifies RN immediately of any significant change in a patient’s condition and/or monitoring alarms (for example: change in vital signs, change in patient’s mental status, complaints of pain, abnormal blood sugar, patient fall or other injury, patient concerns with care).
- Accurately collects and records patient data (vital signs, intake and output, blood sugar, weights, other) and complies with hospital documentation standards to ensure a complete and accurate patient record. 5. COLLABORATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY CARE

Remains with the patient or ensures patient is attended by staff when of other home unit. o Stretcher is cleaned after every transport with an antibacterial as provided in the department. o Delivers specimens to laboratory as needed, following proper procedures related to the handling of specimens during transport, as requested by staff. o Strictly practices Standard Precautions. Checks with nursing staff for specific instructions if necessary. o Performs the transportation of the deceased to the morgue in a respectful manner. Always uses proper morgue stretcher and is accompanied by a second escort.
- Performs and records vital signs, EKG, and phlebotom
