Environmental Health & Safety Preparedness Officer Are you passionate about workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and creating a secure environment for patients, visitors, and team members? WakeMed is seeking an Environment of Care & Emergency Management Officer to help lead and support critical safety, life safety, and emergency management programs across our healthcare system. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert and operational leader, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of safety and preparedness.
You will collaborate with leaders and staff throughout the organization to develop policies, conduct drills and inspections, manage improvement initiatives, and respond to safety and emergency incidents. Key Responsibilities Lead daily operational activities related to Environment of Care, Life Safety, and Emergency Management programs. Develop, maintain, and implement safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
Coordinate and conduct drills, exercises, inspections, and regulatory readiness activities. Manage performance improvement initiatives and corrective action plans to enhance safety and compliance. Investigate safety incidents and emergencies, identify root causes, and ensure follow-up actions are completed.
Support regulatory and accreditation surveys, including documentation, reporting, and compliance activities. Prepare quarterly and annual program reports and maintain required records. Provide education and training to staff on safety, emergency preparedness, and life safety requirements.
Lead and participate in committees, task forces, and workgroups, serving as a trusted resource throughout the organization. Respond to safety-related incidents, emergencies, and system events as needed. What You'll Need Strong knowledge of safety, emergency management, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement practices.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively collaborate with leaders, staff, and external regulatory agencies. Commitment to maintaining a safe and prepared healthcare environment.
Additional Requirements As part of WakeMed's emergency preparedness responsibilities, this role may require working outside of regularly scheduled hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays. Team members may be expected to remain at or return to work during emergencies, incidents, or special events to support critical system operations and regulatory requirements. Certification Requirement: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification required within one year of hire.
