ELLIS MEDICINE POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Environmental Service Worker DEPARTMENT: Environmental Services REPORTS TO: Team Lead/Supervisor of Environmental Services SECTION I BASIC FUNCTION: To perform routine preventative, restorative, and corrective cleaning, including disinfection of the facility. Follow seven-step cleaning, terminal cleaning, waste, and biohazard removal/handling, and work in maintaining sanitary conditions in public areas, resident areas, and surgical rooms.
Follow policies and procedures, ensure standards of cleaning/sanitizing are being met, and always follow safe work practices. Responsible for ensuring timely room turns related to patient throughput within the basic principles of environmental hygiene and infection prevention. The environmental services worker 1, following organizational standards of quality, is essential to cleaning, disinfection, infection prevention, and patient experience.
SECTION II EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Preferably a high school graduate or equivalent. Must be able to read and follow simple directions. Experience in health care or related housekeeping for at least 3 months preferred.
Possesses a strong ability to gain knowledge of cleaning procedures, including the use of chemicals, products, and equipment. Compassion: Serve every person with empathy, dignity, and compassion. SECTION IV PHYSICAL
The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 50 lb., lift/move 50 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations, such as using EVS equipment, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as burnishing, buffing, scrubbing, and vacuuming. Mobility requirements may include the ability to stand at a workstation for a prolonged period of time, operating floor and housekeeping equipment, in addition to being able to walk, squat, and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance.
Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language. SECTION V PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: Performs daily cleaning and sanitizing using the “Seven Step Cleaning Process,” including removing general and regulated medical waste or project work in each assigned area. Communicate daily with patients, nursing staff, physicians, and immediate supervisors regarding room discharge and miscellaneous cleaning.
Communicate with supervisors to attend to specific projects for each unit. Maintains cleaning cart(s), supplies, and equipment by properly stocking and restocking the environmental services cart neatly and orderly. Responsible for using basic housekeeping equipment, i.e., mop pails, mops, dust mops, wiping cloths, standard upright vacuums, and cleaning equipment (buffers, automatic scrubbers, carpet extractors, wide-area vacuums).
Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting rooms with the approved cleaning agents, including EPA-registered disinfectants, for locations and surfaces with potential for exposure to infectious diseases. Responsible for moving and setting up equipment, furniture, and other assigned items. Additional tasks and duties as assigned.
