Under the supervision of the Fire & Life Safety Systems Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for Campus Fire Alarm Systems installations, programming, operation, maintenance, inspection, testing, Fireworks monitoring networks, other system connection and inventory. The incumbent inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure all work performed complies with applicable codes. FS employs over 460 professional staff and acts as a steward for over $100 million in operating funds to achieve its goals in operating and maintaining the UCSF campus environment. FS is organized into 7 operating units: (1) West Campus/Parnassus Operations, (2) East Campus/Mission Bay Operations, (3) Engineering & Utilities, (4) Facilities Projects (5) Business Operations Service Center, (6) Custodial Services, and (7) Office of the AVC, including Administration & Communications.

Incumbent tests, installs, programs, maintains, and repairs campus fire alarm systems and devices; performs disconnections, relocations, and reconnections of fire alarm system devices and equipment on construction and alteration projects; inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure that work performed complies with applicable codes; and performs tie-ins of new fire alarm systems devices.
Incumbent will also obtain and remain current on all training and certifications required by the manufactures to service systems hardware and software. 10% Yes Assists contractors and staff associated with testing and installation of fire and life safety systems Objective: To ensure proper installation and testing techniques are employed by assigned personnel (whether in-house or contracted labor is used). The incumbent will meet with test or installation personnel and assist as directed by the Manager of Fire and Security Systems.
Incumbent will be present at various times on the jobsite to ensure proper procedures are being followed. 5% Yes Reviews new construction and remodeling of fire and life safety system design and installation Objective: To ensure that proposed and new construction of fire and life safety systems and associated devices are compatible with existing campus fire and safety systems. The incumbent provides campus fire and life safety systems technical information on system functions, specifications, and the results of on-site evaluations and surveys to design consultants and contractors who design and/or install fire and life safety systems and associated devices on campus; and reviews systems drawings and specifications for new construction to ensure compatibility with existing campus fire and security systems. 5% Yes Maintains equipment inventory Objective: To ensure that required equipment and spare parts are in stock for replacement as necessary.
The incumbent maintains an inventory of all fire and life safety equipment and spare parts; and orders parts needed to maintain replacement stock. 5% Yes Maintains fire and life safety system and operational records Objective: To provide accurate, timely records of fire and life safety system operations, maintenance, technical and installation data. The incumbent maintains fire and life safety system operations and maintenance manuals, instructions, drawings, and technical data; prepares operational and maintenance logs and reports; and performs related administrative tasks.

Two (2) years of experience installing, programming, maintaining, and/or troubleshooting complex addressable, networked commercial or institutional fire alarm systems, such as Edwards EST3/EST4 or equivalent systems. Demonstrated theoretical and working knowledge of electricity, electronics, and electronic and computerized fire alarm system design and operation. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot fire alarm system failures.
Demonstrated knowledge or ability to obtain manufacturers certification on the following systems: Edwards Systems Technology panels and networked fire alarm systems. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and fire system schematics. Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes.
Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with contractors, consultants, customers, and staff. Background check required.
Experience with fire alarm systems in university, healthcare, or similarly complex institutional environments. Edwards/EST manufacturer certification or training. Understanding of EST Fireworks stations networking with fiber optics.
Experience with EST FireWorks monitoring stations and networked fire alarm systems. NICET Level II or higher Fire Alarm Systems certification. Experience installing, programming, maintaining, or troubleshooting Edwards EST3 fire alarm systems.
