Operates and maintains equipment used for embedding, sectioning, staining, and cover slipping specimens. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

May act as a preceptor for new employees and histology students/interns while providing leadership and mentoring to histotechnicians, histotechnologists, and laboratory support staff. Performs quality control testing, equipment maintenance, identifies problems affecting test performance or reporting, and troubleshoots issues. Ensures analytic accuracy, precision, and sensitivity in test methods.

Maintains established facility and department policies and procedures. Conducts analytical activities related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping, and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical, and body fluid specimens. Participates in proficiency testing programs, ensuring deadlines are met and samples are analyzed like patient samples.

Performs immunohistochemical staining, documents quality control, and maintains instrumentation and supplies. Follows safety policies, including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and adheres to the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. May prepare and process cytology specimens for staining and examination by pathologists.

May prepare specimens for research requests. Performs special stains on tissues as needed, maintaining solutions and documenting quality control. Collects and processes biological specimens for analysis following established procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Ability to prepare tissue specimens to confirm patient diagnoses [Required]Ability to perform complex histological procedures, record and analyze data, and maintain/repair instruments [Required]Up-to-date knowledge of specimen handling, ranging from accession to specimen storage [Required]Knowledge of medical terminology [Required]Knowledgeable in troubleshooting and problem resolution [Required]Ability to support continuous laboratory service improvement to ensure timely preparations for quality diagnoses [Required]Ability to maintain safety standards and comply with government regulations in laboratory practices [Required]Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the health care industryAbility to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients and their family, hospital staff, nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals [Required]Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English [Required]Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office [Required]Education:Associate [Required]Bachelor's [Preferred]Field of Study:Florida - Associate's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. [Required]Multi-State Division - Bachelor's in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR education equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR qualified and served as testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024.
