Responsible for the delivery of patient care that promotes safety and well-being of all patients in the assigned department(s) on a twenty-four hour basis. Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the overall clinical nursing practice and administrative activities, including fiscal, material and human resources management. Participates in the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures, as well as making suggestions for revision of same.
Maintains open communication with Behavioral Leadership Team and the clinical team on all units including the private and state units of the hospital. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities. Knowledge of wide range of disorders, emotional, development, social and behavior.
Performs crisis intervention. Participates in clinical assessment of patients referred to ensure that admission criteria are met and that the patients meet legal criteria for admission. Provides clinical administrative support with operations on all inpatient mental health units.
POSITION EDUCATION/
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current registered nurse license in good standing in the State of Texas
- The successful candidate will be required to pass competencies for this position.
- Current BLS certification required.
- CPI Training within 30 days of hire date.
- Must be able to be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
- Good written and verbal communication skills required.
- Ability to read, write and speak English
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
- Hospital Experience in Behavioral Health or related field preferred

Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment. Must present a professional image. Requires working with frequent interruptions. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practices Coordinate with the directors and prepare for the regular reporting of case reviews, time lines, and quality trends from case review data.
Provide effective leadership to the assigned departments of responsibility. Integrate the department(s) and its services into the organization’s primary mission. Coordinate and integrate services within the department(s) and with other departments.
Develop, update and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provisions of services. Recommend a sufficient number of qualified and competent people to provide care. Responsible for supporting management and staff, to achieve and maintain accreditation and regulatory compliance within behavioral hospital with emphasis in psychiatric Services.
Assists in the preparation of action plans. Determine the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide care services and who are not licensed independent practitioners. Continuously assess and improve the department’s performance.
Complete special assignments as assigned. Assist in the research and development of new patient care protocols and provides staff support for research activities. Maintain appropriate quality improvement programs for Civil and Forensic Units Support other units and their leaders throughout the hospital Provide for orientation, in-service education training, and continuing education of all people in the department(s).
Participate in selecting outside sources for needed services Promote a safe and productive culture for patients and staff in Civil and Forensic Units Assist with the coordination of admission and discharges within the Civil and Forensic Units Ensure clinical staff are up to date with all compliance and regulatory standards required by their positions to include certifications and licensure renewal Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
