Job Overview Fairview Range is hiring a Laboratory Care Technician for our Range Clinic Laboratory Department in Hibbing, MN . As a Laboratory Care Technician (LCT), you will be working with a diverse population within our healthcare environment, the Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient and professional services in keeping with Fairview Values as they interact with our patients, families, and co-workers.
The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection at various Fairview or outreach locations, as well as provides for safe and secure specimen handling and point of care testing. Responsible for accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System and associated subsystems; monitoring computer logs for incomplete work; scheduling tests/procedures and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone, the LCT's attention to detail and accuracy are the foundation for our providing quality laboratory services.
Working as an individual or team member, the LCT continuously works towards providing quality service improvement and optimum support to the department and team members in achieving M Health Fairview's goals across all of the Fairview Range Clinics- Hibbing, Mountain Iron and Nashwauk.
This position will work 32 to 64 hours per two weeks. The shift length will be 8-hours on the Day/Evening shift. We are a CAP accredited, highly complex lab with a fully functional microbiology lab including molecular testing and have on-site pathology support. We’re proud to offer a collaboration with the M Health Fairview laboratory systems, which allows our patients local access to a more extensive array of lab services. CAP accredited.
Lab consists of chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, transfusion medicine including antibody identification, microbiology, histology, cytology, and pathology. Part of multidisciplinary care team supporting each inpatient department. Lab staff include MLS/MT, HT, MLT, and LCT as well as tech specialists in various lab sections.

As a Laboratory Care Technician , you will: Follow established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures. Collect biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Perform phlebotomy at various sites and communicate special handling needs of the specimen. Use appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs. Demonstrate proficiency with point of care testing and/or waived testing.
May perform EKGs. May train others in phlebotomy skills. Ensure specimens are acceptable for testing, including properly identified.
Process specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs. Perform daily quality control, troubleshooting and equipment maintenance. Monitor inventory, ordering and restocking supplies.
Mentor and teaches students. Prioritize work to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Prioritize assigned work.
Transport blood and body fluid under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner. Seek assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations. Accurately enter and release order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
Monitor computer logs for incomplete work. Schedule tests/procedures. Provide results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.
Acquire additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area. Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program. Maintain a safe work environment.
Adhere to safety protocols. Follow infection control guidelines. Respond appropriately to emergent situations.
Required Qualifications High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. • Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided. and Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program or Completion of three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience or Enrollment in MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course. Must be at least 18 years of age. Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Demonstrate manual dexterity.
Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples. Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) certification required when working in clinic setting
Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity. Some positions will require reliable transportation.
