JOB SUMMARY Under the direct supervision of the Orthopaedic Institute Practice Supervisor and Manager, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the clinical staff and the physician leadership, the Hospital Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing procedures including assuring positive care outcomes.
S/he will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of the primary and specialty care services provided to patients within the practice. S/he is required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the MedicalCenter. Exemplary customer service is essential.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS % of time Essential Function (Yes/No ) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 50 Y Clinical Performs routine clinical functions and documents in patient chart, including but not limited to vital signs, height, weight, pain screening and documentation of chief complaints and current medications. Assists patients in preparation for exam and/or procedures.
Rooming of patients. Prepare room for exam, i.e. pulling up electronic medical records and x-ray studies. Performs medication reconciliation in prep for provider.
Performs cast application and removal. Transports patients as directed. Monitors patient flow in and out of the clinic.
Updated tracking board and Expeditor light system (OI). Obtains specimens and performs simple laboratory procedures as directed. Performs clinical activities in an accurate and timely manner.
Ensures that x-ray films are available for each patient’s visit. Assist with the instruction of crutches, canes, and walker ambulation. Documents all patient care activities, results, patient related communication and enter this information into the medical record as appropriate.
Checks medications supplies for expiration on a monthly basis; discards when expired. Complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by JCAHO/Title 22.
Completion of annual competency testing. 20 Y Communication Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow through in all telephone communications, maintaining the Medical Center Telephone Standards. Ensures a professional and helpful working environment by upholding the House Standards as adopted by the MedicalCenter. Shares pertinent information and observations with other health team members.

Being a team player is essential. 20 Y Operations Maintenance Maintains clean, well-stocked examination rooms.
Responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies. Maintains supply standards as directed by nursing staff or appropriate supervisor. Adheres to infection control procedures as outlined in the Infection Control Manual.
Adheres to the Ambulatory Services policy and procedures for the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing of equipment. Completes refrigerator log per Medical Center Policy. Ensures that medication cabinets, needles and syringes are locked Completes AED daily check (where applicable such as OI). 10 Y Other Functions and Responsibilities Follows all department and Medical Center policies, procedures, and work rules.
Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patients and staff. Follows House and Telephone standards as established by Medical Center (e.g., able to state the mission of the organization, greets customers, offers assistance, uses a friendly tone of voice) Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others. Maintains open communication channels with all members of the health care team.
Communicates well with patients and families. Knowledgeable about and adheres to all applicable Medical Center and department specific infection control, health and safety policies and procedures, including annual safety training. Starts work at scheduled time and completes work on time.

Uses appropriate chain of command when applicable, e.g. problem solving, seeking information. Orientation and training of new staff. Cross train to front desk registration and call center.
Covers various pods as a float – sports, Arthroplasty, Trauma, Hand, Foot, Spine and others as designated. Prepares disability forms. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Ability to work in busy, team-oriented environment.
Excellent interpersonal/communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population. Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing. Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
Willingness to learn new task. Ability to organize and effectively set priorities. Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job.
High School Diploma or GED certificate. Prior experience in medical office environment. PREFERRED QUALIFICATION Graduated from an accredited Medical Assisting program Phlebotomy certification 3 months of experience REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Certified Medical Assistant or equivalent combination of training and experience BLS card from the American Heart Association POPULATIONS SERVED Child Adolescent Adult Geriatric
