Medical Assistant II

Job Requirements The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Medical Assistant II to join our healthcare team. Under the direct supervision of an on-site provider, the Medical Assistant II assists in the delivery of patient care by performing delegated clinical and administrative duties, supporting providers and nursing staff, and ensuring an exceptional patient experience.

This role serves as a clinical resource for Medical Assistant I team members and actively contributes to efficient patient flow, quality improvement initiatives, and collaborative team-based care. The Medical Assistant II utilizes the electronic medical record (EMR) to document patient care activities and supports medication transport and storage processes in accordance with established policies and procedures. Provide direct patient care support by obtaining and documenting patient histories, chief complaints, health screenings, vital signs, and other clinical information in the EMR while preparing patients for examinations and procedures. Perform routine clinical testing and procedures, including specimen collection, EKGs, vision and hearing screenings, incentive spirometry, point-of-care testing, medication administration, and vaccinations under provider supervision and according to established protocols.

Support a positive patient experience by delivering compassionate, patient-centered service, addressing concerns, communicating delays, providing educational materials, and helping resolve issues to ensure patient satisfaction. Maintain clinical operations by stocking exam rooms, ensuring equipment readiness and compliance, performing high-level disinfection, assisting with front desk functions as needed, and adhering to safety, regulatory, and organizational policies.

Serve as a collaborative team member and clinical resource by participating in daily huddles, process improvement initiatives, staff training, competency development, and mentoring Medical Assistant I team members while promoting teamwork, accountability, and effective communication. Work Experience Education & Experience - Required High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.

Special circumstances to consider an exception may include: (1 year of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 3 years; or 2 years of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 5 years). These should be vetted by Human Resources Director and Department Director. Current BLS certification.

Medical Assistant certification preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques. Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions. Ability to perform basic clinical skills such as obtaining vital signs.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients, team members within the practice, and other members of the organization.
