Medical Assistant II, Neurology

Job Requirements Under the direct supervision of an on-site provider, the Medical Assistant II supports the delivery of high-quality patient care by performing delegated clinical tasks, assisting providers and nursing staff, and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR). Responsibilities may also include clerical support, medication handling and transport, and active participation in daily clinic operations and patient flow.

The Medical Assistant II serves as a resource for Medical Assistant I staff and demonstrates leadership through collaboration, teamwork, effective communication, accountability, excellent customer service, and advanced clinical knowledge and skills. The following responsibilities describe the general nature and level of work performed in this role and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of duties. Patient Experience Greet patients in a courteous, friendly, respectful, and professional manner.

Follow established communication protocols and respond appropriately to patient questions, concerns, and complaints. Support service recovery efforts when patient expectations are not met. Promote a positive patient and family experience by communicating delays, identifying potential barriers, and escalating concerns when appropriate.

Clinical Duties Obtain and accurately document patient histories, chief complaints, questionnaires, health screenings, and other clinical information in the EMR. Prepare patients for examinations and obtain and document vital signs and required risk screenings. Recognize and report abnormal vital signs or screening results to the provider.

Assist providers with examinations and clinical procedures. Perform routine clinical testing, including blood and urine specimen collection, vision and hearing screenings, EKGs, point-of-care testing, incentive spirometry, and other approved testing. Provide approved patient education materials as directed by the provider.

Administer approved medications, injections, and vaccinations under provider supervision and in accordance with established policies and competencies. Perform appropriate cleaning and high-level disinfection of clinical equipment, instruments, and patient-care areas. Maintain stocked and organized exam rooms and clinical supply areas.

Ensure clinical equipment is properly maintained, current with required inspections, and ready for use. Provide age- and population-appropriate care while considering social drivers that may affect patient health. Follow established clinical workflows to promote efficient patient flow and timely care.

Participate in clinic huddles, staff meetings, process-improvement initiatives, competency evaluations, and ongoing skill development. Work independently within established competencies and serve as a clinical resource for Medical Assistant I staff. May assist with precepting and training new Medical Assistants and students.

Administrative Duties Provide front-desk support as needed, including patient check-in/check-out, scanning, filing, telephone calls, and fee disclosures. Review and respond to business communications, including EMR In Basket messages, email, and telecommunications, in a timely manner. Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and practice/hospital policies.

Promote a safe environment of care and promptly report safety concerns. Additional Responsibilities Participate in staff training, skill development, and competency activities as requested by the Practice Manager. Maintain professional development through independent learning, educational programs, and in-services.

Perform other duties as assigned. Work Experience Education & Experience - Required Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program. o Special circumstances to consider an exception may include: (1 year of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 3 years; or 2 years of supervised work experience in a medical assisting field within the last 5 years). These should be vetted by Human Resources Director and Department Director.

Current BLS certification. Education & Experience - Preferred Medical Assistant certification preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques. Knowledge of blood and body fluid precautions.

Ability to perform basic clinical skills such as obtaining vital signs. Ability to communicate effectively with patients, team members within the practice, and other members of the organization. Demonstrates ability to work on a team and effectively communicate with colleagues and patients.
