JOB
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs laboratory testing and reports accurate results used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. This position performs testing in assigned laboratory areas, including hematology, chemistry, bacteriology, and blood bank, while operating and maintaining laboratory instrumentation according to established protocols and procedures. The MLT ensures quality and patient safety by performing required quality control, recognizing abnormal or critical results, troubleshooting routine instrument issues, and maintaining accurate laboratory documentation.
DUTIES: Performs routine and moderately complex laboratory testing in assigned areas, including hematology, chemistry, bacteriology, and blood bank, according to established procedures and regulatory standards. Operates laboratory instruments and equipment, recognizes malfunctions or testing concerns, performs basic troubleshooting, and notifies appropriate personnel when additional intervention is required. Performs and documents required quality control, instrument checks, and preventive maintenance and takes appropriate corrective action when results fall outside established parameters.
Reviews laboratory results for accuracy and recognizes abnormal, unusual, or critical values, ensuring timely notification and complete documentation according to departmental policy. Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to accurately enter, verify, and report patient test results while following established computer and documentation procedures. Meets established productivity standards, completes scheduled and pending testing, reviews outstanding work, and assists with monitoring departmental supplies and inventory.
Participates in proficiency testing, shift-change communication, and documentation of pending tests, instrument concerns, or other outstanding issues to support continuity of laboratory operations. Follows established safety procedures and maintains effective communication with laboratory leadership, coworkers, and patient care staff while promoting teamwork and excellent customer service. JOB
- Licensure as a Medical Laboratory Technician by Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board OR National Certification as Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP, AMT, AAB Required
- Associate's Degree from a NAACLS-accredited Laboratory Science Program Required
