The Nurse Manager provides strategic and operational nursing leadership for the clinical practices located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the 2150 Pennsylvania Avenue building. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, consistent, and patient-centered delivery of clinical care while providing direct leadership and accountability for nursing and clinical support operations. This is an onsite position requiring regular presence in the Washington, DC area to partner closely with leadership, employees, and operational teams.
Qualifications The Nurse Manager directly manages two Nurse Supervisors and four Lead Medical Assistants, who provide frontline leadership and support for Registered Nurses, Nurse Supervisors and Medical Assistant. Through this leadership structure, the Nurse Manager provides oversight of clinical staffing, daily assignments, nursing practice, Medical Assistant workflows, employee performance, training and competency, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and clinical quality.
The Nurse Manager serves as the primary nursing leadership resource for the assigned practices and works collaboratively with physicians, practice leadership, Nurse Supervisors, Lead Medical Assistants, and administrative leadership to ensure clinical operations effectively support patient care and provider needs. The position is responsible for identifying operational and clinical barriers, implementing standardized workflows, developing staff, improving clinical performance, and ensuring appropriate staffing and resources are available to support efficient patient access and high-quality care.

and Responsibilities Nursing Leadership and Staff Management Provides direct leadership, coaching, development, and performance management for Nurse Supervisors and Lead Medical Assistants. Provides overall leadership and accountability for nursing and Medical Assistant operations across assigned practices. Establishes clear performance expectations for frontline clinical leaders and ensures consistent application of policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
Conducts regular leadership meetings with Nurse Supervisors and Lead Medical Assistants to review staffing, workflow, patient-care concerns, performance issues, training needs, and operational priorities. Partners with Human Resources and appropriate leadership regarding employee relations, performance improvement, corrective action, attendance, and disciplinary matters. Participates in interviewing, selecting, onboarding, evaluating, developing, and retaining nursing and clinical support staff.
Identifies leadership-development opportunities for Nurse Supervisors, Lead Medical Assistants, nurses, and other clinical team members. Promotes employee engagement, accountability, teamwork, professional development, and a culture of service excellence. Staffing and Workforce Management Provides oversight of clinical staffing assignments for approximately 19 nurses and 26 Medical Assistants.
Works with Nurse Supervisors and Lead Medical Assistants to ensure appropriate daily staffing levels and clinical coverage based on patient volumes, provider schedules, clinical needs, and practice demands. Reviews staffing patterns, vacancies, call-outs, leave, workload, overtime, and coverage gaps and develops solutions to maintain continuity of patient care. Ensures clinical staff are appropriately assigned based on competencies, scope of practice, patient-care requirements, and operational needs.
Provides leadership during unexpected staffing shortages and assists with developing contingency coverage plans. Evaluates staffing models and makes recommendations to leadership regarding workforce needs, vacancies, recruitment priorities, and appropriate staffing levels. Performance and Accountability Monitors clinical team performance and ensures appropriate follow-up regarding identified performance concerns.
Coaches Nurse Supervisors and Lead Medical Assistants on effective employee management, communication, conflict resolution, documentation, and performance management. Ensures performance concerns are appropriately documented and addressed in accordance with organizational policy. Reviews operational and clinical performance indicators and develops action plans when performance does not meet established expectations.
Holds clinical leadership accountable for timely completion of required training, competencies, evaluations, and corrective actions. Patient Safety, Quality and Regulatory Compliance Maintains oversight of clinical quality, patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance for assigned practices. Ensures compliance with organizational policies and applicable HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, infection-control, safety, and emergency preparedness requirements.
Oversees review and resolution of clinically related patient complaints and serves as an escalation resource for significant patient-care concerns. Reviews Compliance 360 reports and other safety or quality events and ensures appropriate investigation, corrective action, staff education, and follow-up. Identifies trends involving safety events, patient complaints, workflow concerns, or clinical performance and implements improvement initiatives.
Participates in quality-improvement, patient-safety, and patient-experience initiatives. Ensures clinical teams maintain readiness for regulatory reviews, audits, and inspections. Medication, Vaccine and Clinical Supply Oversight Provides management oversight of processes for securing, storing, tracking, and maintaining medications, vaccines, and clinical supplies.
Ensures appropriate inventory levels are maintained to support daily clinical operations. Ensures medication and vaccine storage and handling practices meet organizational and regulatory requirements. Works with clinical leadership to identify supply concerns, prevent unnecessary waste, and maintain financially responsible clinical operations.
Emergency and Direct Clinical Support Provides nursing leadership during clinical emergencies and ensures staff appropriately activate emergency response procedures. Ensures clinical staff maintain competency in emergency protocols and required emergency response procedures. Physician and Provider Partnership Develops strong working relationships with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, practice leadership, and clinical staff.
Partners with providers to identify opportunities to improve clinical workflows, staffing, communication, patient access, and care delivery. Addresses provider concerns related to clinical staffing or workflow and develops sustainable operational solutions. Facilitates communication between providers and clinical leadership to ensure appropriate resources are available to support patient-care needs.
Culture and Communication Demonstrates professional communication and leadership with employees, patients, providers, and organizational leadership. Serves as a role model for professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and service excellence. Promotes organizational values, including iCARE principles, throughout the clinical workforce.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited nursing program required. Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related healthcare field preferred. Licensure Current and unrestricted District of Columbia Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
Current BLS certification required or obtained within the organization's established timeframe. Experience Minimum 5 years of progressive clinical nursing experience, preferably within an ambulatory, physician practice, multispecialty, or similar healthcare environment. Minimum 3 years of nursing leadership, supervisory, or management experience strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience managing clinical teams, staffing, employee performance, clinical workflows, competency programs, patient safety, and quality initiatives. Experience leading through subordinate supervisors or clinical team leads strongly preferred. Experience supporting multiple practices, specialties, departments, or clinical locations preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong nursing leadership and people-management skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and develop frontline clinical supervisors and team leads. Strong understanding of ambulatory clinical operations and patient-care workflows.
Knowledge of nursing scope of practice, Medical Assistant functions, infection prevention, patient safety, HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA requirements. Strong staffing, scheduling, workforce-planning, and resource-management capabilities. Ability to analyze operational and clinical data and translate findings into actionable improvement plans.
