The staff pharmacist assures that the pharmacy department dispenses the correct medication to the correct patient by the correct route of administration at the right time. These tasks take a combination of individual participation and first line supervision of technician staff. The staff pharmacist will also participate in clinical pharmacy programs in accordance with currently established health care standards and hospital policies and procedures.

Inpatient Pharmacist : Prepares and dispenses medication orders Verifies accuracy of order based on physician direction Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and transcribes to computerized patient profiles accurately when necessary Contacts and confers with physicians and nursing staff if there are any questions or irregularities regarding medication orders and advises health care professionals on matters relating to drug selection and dosage for patients.
Counsels patients when appropriate and answers patients’ questions in regards to medications. Answers phone calls and in-person requests politely and respectfully and communicates any issues requiring pharmacist attention to appropriate personnel Attends hospital programs and meetings, and serves on committees. Acts as a drug information resource to patients, medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel Utilizes the Cerner system efficiently Practices pharmacy, upholding required policies and procedures Maintains working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
Maintains records for adequate control and distribution of controlled substances, poisons, etc. received and issued in accordance with federal and state regulations Supervises Pharmacy Technicians Monitors work flow to ensure all daily functions are accomplished and directs pharmacy technicians to complete tasks in an accurate and timely manner. Verifies all technician orders are filled correctly and efficiently, including sterile IV compounds Orders controlled substances through CSOS.
Monitors drug inventory effectively, to ensure economical usage of supplies while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction Maintains a hospital wide adverse drug reaction program Evidences the knowledge and ability to assess and interpret data about the patient’s growth and development in order to identify each patients needs and provide the appropriate care, including age related care, where appropriate. Infant Pediatric Adolescence Adult Geriatric Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customer and hospital business affairs. Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies.
Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards. Attendance is an essential function of this position. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy (RPh) Continuing Education necessary to fulfill Ohio State Board of Pharmacy requirements Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and handle stressful situations appropriately Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff, including nurses, physicians, and other medical personnel Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt responsively if changes occur in workload or work schedule Ability to set priorities, exercise sound professional judgment, make critical decisions, and respond quickly to emergency situations or expedited requests.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing when necessary Ability to evaluate medical and pharmaceutical reference texts efficiently Ability to supervise and monitor pharmacy technician workflow to ensure effective patient care 1 year hospital pharmacy experience (hospital pharmacist only) Immunization certification* (retail pharmacist only) * required to be achieved as soon as possible but not later than six (6) months after hire date Preferred: Doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) Certifications and Licenses
