A Brief Overview The Pharmacy Technician 1 is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 1 functions in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist.
All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
- For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 1, activities as permitted by licensure include but are not limited to:
- Accurate preparation of patient medications, including non-sterile products.
- Accurate and timely delivery of patient specific medications.
- Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock. For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 1, activities include but are not limited to:
- Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
- Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
- Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience. For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 1, activities include but are not limited to:
- Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
- Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
- Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.

Education High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician training program (Preferred) Work Experience Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or community setting. (Preferred) Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Understanding of metric system and basic math concepts. (Required proficiency) Good communication skills are essential.
