This is an outpatient position within the UCSF Health Hyde Hospital Rehabilitation Services department. The Staff Physical Therapist (Physical Therapist 2) reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Staff Physical Therapist works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescents may also be treated.
Under general direction and upon receipt of licensed approved provider written referrals, the Staff Physical Therapist plans and administers a full range of physical therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using physical therapy tests and measurements, the establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and the development of therapeutic intervention programs, and the implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing physical therapy interventions, modalities, and procedures.
The Staff Physical Therapist demonstrates practice competence managing patients of varying clinical acuity and complexity. The Staff Physical Therapist may seek mentoring for novel clinical presentations or areas of specialty practice for which the Staff Physical Therapist is not experienced or certified. The Staff Physical Therapist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services, is organized in work habits, and demonstrates effective time management skills.
While performing job duties, the Staff Physical Therapist may also supervise Physical Therapy Students and Physical Therapy Residents, in addition to Physical Therapist Assistants and Rehabilitation Aides. The Staff Physical Therapist participates in regular professional and clinical development activities, completing 40 hours or more per year. As a member of the clinical care team, the Staff Physical Therapist also participates in and may lead compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement initiatives in the department, local care setting, and organization.

Selects and administers various evidence-based muscle, neurological, gait, functional and developmental tests to determine a patient’s functional impairments. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based on the patient’s progress and performance. Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of physical therapy techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence, appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports ( eg CCS, Medi-Cal) Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families, department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel. Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences as indicated. Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills. Performs any other duties related to patient care, as required. 15% YES Completes work-related routine departmental tasks ( eg. timecard completion, schedule sign up) in a timely manner. Communicates clearly and timely with Supervisor and Manager regarding work requirements including changes in availability/status, conformance with licensure and AHA BLS certification renewal, and completion of UC required learning. Participates in and may lead department and organizational compliance, quality, safety, and process improvement activities. Performs any other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager. Participates in orientation and training of new staff; may serve as a clinical mentor for colleagues seeking to advance their skills and competence. Participates in and provides programs to other hospital departments and the community. Participates in clinical instruction of affiliating short- and long-term Physical Therapy students. Participates in educational activities related to other health care students ( eg nursing, medical, occupational therapy students). - DPT doctoral degree. o If graduated 15 or more years ago, a bachelor’s degree is acceptable.
- Minimum of 1 year of licensed practice experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to recognize signs of distress.
- Basic computer skills, including experience working within the Epic electronic medical record (EMR).
- Demonstrated interpersonal, time management, problem-solving, and self-initiation skills.
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
- Prior clinical experience in outpatient orthopedic patient care settings, including sports medicine experience.
- APTA Board Certification in an area of Physical Therapy specialty.
- Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary healthcare provider team. Required Licenses/Certifications
- Possession of, or proven eligibility for, licensure as a Physical Therapist by the Physical Therapy Board of California.
- Possession of, or proven eligibility for, AHA BLS certification.
