D or equivalent Required Related Experience Completion of residency and a Critical Care/ Trauma Fellowship Proven success in Leadership Required License/Registration/Certification Board Certified in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care/Trauma Active and unencumbered DEA Current, or eligibility to obtain, medical licensure in the state of Kentucky Job Summary The University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Surgery is seeking a Division Chief of Acute Care Surgery, Trauma and Critical Care Surgery to provide strategic direction for one of the region’s premier trauma programs while advancing the Division’s clinical, educational, and research missions.
The Division Chief will oversee a comprehensive program built around UK HealthCare’s American College of Surgeons-accredited Level I Trauma Center, one of only two Level I Trauma Centers serving the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Division serves as a regional referral center for central and southeastern Kentucky, providing tertiary trauma care to a service area encompassing 60 counties, approximately 20,000 square miles, and a population of more than 1.4 million people.
The person in this position will maintain an active clinical practice while fostering excellence in trauma surgery, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care. The Division Chief will be expected to grow the Division’s regional and national reputation through innovation in clinical care, education, quality improvement, outreach, and scholarly activity. The UK College of Medicine Department of Surgery is a strong, multidisciplinary team of more than 275 people dedicated to advancing Kentucky health care together.
Our department encompasses 101 faculty members, 118 APPs, 56 staff members, and more than 400 learners annually. The department is home to a broad multidisciplinary scope of surgical practice and nationally recognized for its contributions to the advancement of clinical care, surgical education, research, and innovations in medical technology . Each year, providers in the department care for more than 14,000 patients across multiple clinical sites.
The department trains 78 residents and 10 fellows across 9 accredited programs and 1 unaccredited program, while also contributing to the education of medical students and graduate trainees. Faculty secure over $6 million in grant funding annually to pursue cutting-edge research and discoveries, supporting projects in areas such as aging, surgical device development, colorectal cancer, neuroblastoma, oncology, sepsis, thrombosis, and solid organ transplant and transplant rejection.
The department has published 152 peer-reviewed articles in the past year and maintains 20 active clinical trials.
