The Psychiatric Medical Registered Nurse (RN) demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders across all lifespans. Provides timely assessment, crisis intervention, and therapeutic nursing care to patients experiencing behavioral health conditions and psychiatric emergencies along with being competent in medical aspects of patient care and medical emergencies.
Practices professional nursing in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and accepted standards of care, utilizing the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Delivers evidence-based, patient-centered care that promotes safety, recovery, and optimal health outcomes. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing comprehensive patient assessments; administering medications and therapeutic treatments; interpreting diagnostic and laboratory findings; developing and modifying individualized plans of care; collaborating with physicians and the interdisciplinary treatment team; coordinating patient care; providing patient and family education; and documenting care in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
Demonstrates sound clinical judgment, critical thinking, and effective decision-making while managing behavioral and medical health crises and promoting a safe, therapeutic environment. Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements. Traditional high school diploma or general educational development (GED) certificate required. Graduate of accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) accepted. Current/Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas or compact state licensure required. Current/Active Advance Cardiovascular (or Cardiac) Life Support within 6 months of hire Current/Active Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire.
Current/Active Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire. Current/Active Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) within 6 months of hire. Current/Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, American Heart Association (AHA) preferred.
Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training within 30 days of hire date and annually thereafter. Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE) competency training completed prior to competition of orientation and annually thereafter. Demonstrated proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and other computer applications required to support clinical documentation and patient care to be effective on assigned units.
Demonstrates cultural competence and the ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. English Proficiency- verbal, reading, and writing required. Spanish Proficiency- verbal, reading, and writing preferred.
JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: One (1) – two (2) years of experience preferred but not required. Adherence to Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice. Ability to utilize the best nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others.
Require constant and frequent judgment and response, occasionally in response to disasters or emergencies, actual events or drills. Knowledge of psychiatric, behavioral, cognitive, emotional, developmental, and substance use disorders across the lifespan. Ability to assess, intervene, and respond effectively to psychiatric and behavioral health crises using therapeutic communication and de-escalation techniques.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, recovery-oriented practice, suicide risk assessment, violence prevention, and crisis intervention principles. Previous behavioral health, psychiatric, forensic, correctional, emergency, or acute care nursing experience preferred. Knowledge of forensic and civil behavioral health populations, legal and ethical standards, patient rights, and safety practices preferred.
Successful completion of all required orientation, competency validations, and annual competency assessments. Ability to provide compassionate, culturally competent, and patient-centered care while maintaining professional boundaries. Strong critical thinking, clinical judgment, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced behavioral health environment.

Demonstrate competency in providing safe, therapeutic, and age-appropriate nursing care to pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric behavioral health patients, recognizing developmental, psychosocial, medical, and psychiatric needs across the lifespan. Monitor vital signs, laboratory results, diagnostic findings, and patient responses to treatments, promptly communicating significant changes to the provider. Formulate, modify and implement goal-oriented patient care plans according to facility Competent within nursing skills such as intravenous insertions, Foley catheter insertions, nasogastric tube insertions, etc.
Assume responsibility to report clinical limitations or the need for assistance to the supervisor. Inform the charge nurse of any anticipated and/or actual issues/problems. Recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies, deterioration, and changes in patient condition, including activation of emergency response protocols Coordinate patient care with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, case management, pharmacy, and ancillary departments to promote optimal outcomes.
Adapt to the needs of the unit by demonstrating flexibility/adaptability. Accept assignment to any behavioral health unit. Perform nursing care using sound clinical judgment.
Implement physician orders safely and accurately. Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers. Transcribe and implement physician orders.
Maintain detailed and accurate documentation. Participate in patient/family education and emotional support. Maintain a safe and clean environment.
Give and receive shift report. Administer medications and therapies. Perform other duties as assigned.
Provide direction to unlicensed nursing personnel. Anticipate problems and intervene appropriately. Plan and coordinates work schedules with peers.

Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
