Weekends as required. Duties & Responsibilities SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND
The psychologist will work as part of an integrated care team within Pediatric Primary Care to address the developmental and behavioral health needs of children and adolescents. They are equipped to provide a range of therapeutic services from brief to longer-term interventions, including diagnostic assessment, crisis counseling, individual psychotherapy, and family therapy. They are familiar with various screening tools and possess skills in culturally responsive, trauma-informed approaches to care, with experience working with families impacted by social determinants of health or with complex needs.
This position is part of TeamUp, a grant-funded initiative integrating behavioral health into pediatric primary care from birth through adolescence. Candidates are expected to take part in TeamUp activities and demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team. General tasks and responsibilities will include: 1.
Provide comprehensive assessment, confirmation of diagnosis, consultation, and brief intervention for less complex presentations of behavioral conditions 2. Consult with integrated care team (PCP and CHW) to provide effective treatment planning and assist patients in successfully achieving goals 3. Contribute to the development of care management processes such as the use of guidelines, disease management techniques, case management, and patient education to improve self-management of chronic disease 4.
Provide timely feedback to the PCP and others involved in patient care, both verbally and through documentation of patient progress and diagnostic information in the patient record 5. Teach patients, families, and staff care, prevention, and treatment enhancement techniques 6. Assist in the detection of “at risk” patients and development of plans to prevent further psychological or physical deterioration 7.
Actively participate in meetings to support implementation and improvement of practice’s integrated care model 8. Monitor the practice’s behavioral health program, identifying problems related to patient services and making recommendations for improvement Other tasks and responsibilities may include: 1. Participate in developmental, social-emotional and behavioral screenings at designated points for children from birth through adolescence, and mental health, ACES, and other screenings for caregivers 2.
Provide consultation services, support, and positive parenting guidance to families with developmental and behavioral concerns about child 3. Help families advocate for their child with behavioral health referrals 4. Provide integrated behavioral health services, including psychotherapy, in pediatric primary care for school-aged, adolescent and young adult patients, as part of the pediatric care team 5.
Conduct parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), parent-child psychotherapy (PCP), traumafocused cognitive behavioral therapy (TFCBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for selected patients as well as other clinically sound approaches to address concerns. 6. Co-lead psycho-educational and psychotherapeutic groups (e.g., parent-child groups, fathers’ groups, adolescent and multidisciplinary healthy lifestyles [obesity] groups) 7.
Participate in multidisciplinary group care “Centering” programs. 8. Help families smoothly transition among women’s health clinic, NICU, pediatrics primary care, and behavioral health services, as well as transition from adolescent to adult care services. 9. Conduct psycho-educational, diagnostic and psychological evaluations resulting in a comprehensive psychological assessment reports. 10.
Supervise and mentor psychologists and other staff members including but not limited to psychology externs, interns and other trainees. 11. Conduct in-service training programs by organizing/staffing conferences and seminars in Behavioral Health. 12. Monitor and manage policies for psychological services in Peds that are compliant with the ethical and professional standards of the APA, NYC Health + Hospitals, HIPPA and other similar entities. 13.
Keep abreast of current psychological theory, treatment and testing approaches designed to maintain and/or increase population specific therapeutic and diagnostic assessment skills through workshops, conferences, and seminars. 14. Complete thorough biopsychosocial assessments, risk assessments, and mental status exams on individual patients. 15. Develop differential diagnoses for patients, ensure proper treatment options for patients. 16.
Complete treatment plans, and therapeutic interventions for patients and families. 17. High quality documentation of clinical services provided, as per departmental guidelines.
- SPECIAL NOTE # = Additional Requirements for Assignment Level II (Effective September 25, 1998) A. A Doctoral Degree in clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology, awarded upon completion of a Doctoral Program in Psychology registered by the New York State Department of Education and designated as licensure qualifying; and B. One additional year of satisfactory full-time experience, either as a Psychologist for the City of New York, or in a supervisory capacity in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology in an approved agency or institution. Employees who complete their Doctoral Degree requirements on or after October 1, 1992 must have at least one year of qualifying experience gained after the completion of all Doctoral Degree requirements; and In the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation Only * Effective September 25, 1998, appointments to Assignment Level II require 1) a Ph.D. as outlined in A above; and 2) one year of qualifying experience as outlined in B above. C. License Requirements for Assignment Level II 1. In the New York City Departments of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services, Police and Fire, and those programs functionally transferred to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation from the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education. 2. In agencies not noted in C. (1.) above, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of assignment. At the discretion of the appointing agency, the period to obtain the license may be extended for up to six months for employees who fail to obtain the license within one year of their assignment. Once obtained, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment. Department Preferences
