Registered Nurse - PCU

Functions as a direct patient care giver within the unit's care delivery system. Integrates nursing theories in patient care JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education or Formal Training Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.) Colorado RN license in good standing BLS required by end of conditional period. ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire NIHSS certification required within 6 months.

PCCN certification preferred. Knowledge, Skill and Ability Demonstrated physical and mental ability to apply nursing theories, procedures and standards to clinical practice Experience One to two years RN clinical nursing experience preferred. Six months to one-year Telemetry/Critical Care experience preferred.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Standard medical/hospital equipment, e.g., wheelchair, carts, monitoring equipment, infusion pumps, phones, computers, telemetry monitoring system, and call light system WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemical, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, etc. Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit.

The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds, and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed). Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES Practical Nurse, Nurse Externs, Patient Care Assistants and Volunteers

AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Patient Care Provides direct total patient care for specific group of patients with collaboration as needed. Demonstrates clinical competence in performing nursing procedures and identifies the rationale underlying the nursing skills. Identifies patient care problems, makes interventions based upon an understanding of the biopsychosocial processes.

Interprets cardiac monitoring system strips as ordered by physician. Assesses patient status systematically and anticipates and responds to changes in patient clinical condition. Actively seeks participation of the patient, family, and other members of the health care team to assure continuity of patient care.

Communicates clearly in all aspects of electronic and verbal documentation. Performs point of care testing. May be a point of care trainer.

It is the expectation that all care providers document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their scope of practice. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards. Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.

Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and hand washing as appropriate. Patient Education Collaborates with interdisciplinary patient care team to identify patient learning needs, develops and implements an individualized teaching plan.

Management and Decision Making Utilizes effective time management skills in planning and providing patient care. Provides constructive input to problem solving. Professional Growth Identifies own learning needs and expands knowledge base through clinical inquiry.

Utilizes and shares knowledge obtained from workshops and literature with health care team on an individual or group basis. Functions as preceptor for students and/or orients new employees.
