RN Endoscopy

Coordinates total nursing care for the Endoscopy and Peri-operative procedure patient. Provides intensive observation and care for the pre- and post-operative procedure patient for which an anesthetic agent or moderate sedation was used. Endoscopy RN – Assists physician/monitors patient intra procedure.

Able to assess, treat and/or care for patients of all ages. 2. Demonstrates assessment and response to changes in the patient’s condition. (Basic understanding and integration of patient care and practice.) 3.

Communicates clearly on all aspects of documentation. 4. Demonstrated physical and mental ability to apply to nursing theories, procedures and standards to clinical practice. 5. Must assume on-call responsibilities. 6.

Must be flexible to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed. Experience Previous experience in Endoscopy, PACU or adult critical care preferred MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED 1. Standard equipment including: cardiac monitoring, airway equipment, non-invasive monitoring devices, Automated Medication dispensing devices, IV pumps, hospital beds, wheelchairs and carts, phone and intercom systems, computers, and associated software programs etc. 2.

Pre / Post RN – clippers, athrombic pumps, non- invasive monitoring systems, and ECG monitors. 3. Endoscopy RN – laser, endoscopes, video equipment/light source, cautery, equipment used through endoscopes WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES 1. Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemicals, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, laser, laser plume, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc. 2.

Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, multi-stimuli, etc. 3. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist.

The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit. 4. The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed). 5. Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. 6.

AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Clinical Patient Care a. Provides safe, competent, effective nursing care in accordance with hospital, Pre / Post /PACU’s standards of care, policies and procedures.

When applicable, employees must be able to adjust the

Actively seeks the participation of members of the health care team and patient's family to ensure continuity of care. i. Prepares specimens and lab forms for laboratory analysis. j. May be required to perform point of care testing.

May be a point of care trainer. k. It is the expectation that all care providers’ document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their department. l. Is familiar with organization, department and job specific fire, safety and disaster policies. 2.

Endoscopy RN: a. Assists the physician with the procedures (e.g., colonoscopy, EGD, bronchoscopy, ERCP, paracentesis, bone marrow biopsy). b. Demonstrates knowledge of preparation, maintenance, cleaning and usage of equipment. c.

Demonstrates knowledge and management of the patient with inadequate airway. d. Administers procedural sedation resulting from moderate sedation. 3. Patient Education a.

Evaluates and plans for patient, significant other and family learning needs and provides pre- and post-procedure education. b. Utilizes additional hospital resources as needed. 4. Management and Decision Making a.

Sets priorities utilizing effective time management in planning and providing patient care in both patient and unit situation with completion of responsibility. b. Provides constructive input to problem solving in both patient and unit situation. c. Consults with and/or advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring follow-up or attention. 5.

Professional Growth a. Continues to expand knowledge base through clinical practice and self-directed learning, identifying own strengths and weaknesses. b. Participates in peer review process as requested. c.

Attends unit educational programs and staff meetings. 6. Professional Contributions a. Promotes the achievement of goals of the unit, division, and hospital. b.

Shares professional knowledge with health care team. c. Functions as preceptor for students and/or orientees with direction. d. Assists with data collection for QA/PI activities. e.

Participates in review of standards. f. Participates actively in projects, committees and meetings both inter- and interdepartmentally. g. Takes call after hours, holiday and weekends on a rotation basis to ensure twenty-four-hour coverage of the unit (per diem- department specific).

Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure. c. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: i. the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); ii. handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and iii. hand washing as appropriate.
