Licensure
In Utah: State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License by DOPL. preferred
Certifications
✓Certificate of completion from a 40-hr Professional Medical Interpreter course
✓Hold an interpreting certification in a different field (e.g., court)
National Certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from either CCHI or NBCMI preferred
Education
✓Hold a college degree in translation or working language
Bachelor’s Degree in Interpretation or Translation, Languages or Communications. preferred
Completion of a college-level medical terminology course. preferred
Qualifications
✓Professional ethics and communication
✓Basic computer and data entry skills
✓Time Management
✓Critical thinking
✓Situational awareness
✓Cultural Communications
✓Medical Knowledge
✓Language Interpretation and Translation
✓Successful completion of a pre-hire skills assessment.
✓Excellent oral and written command of both source and target language(s) as to obtain a “Professional Proficiency” or Level 3 in the ILR scale (or equivalent as approved by Manager), including specialized healthcare terminology.
✓Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast paced, high-pressure environment.
✓Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task.
✓Demonstrated interpersonal verbal and written communication skills to function as part of a team and the flexibility and good judgement to work independently.
✓For candidates who do not meet the Professional Medical Interpreter course requirement: You may be considered if you meet one of the following qualifications (If hired, you will need to complete the 40-hr. course on your own within six months):
✓Have 2 years of experience as a professional interpreter
Two years of experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings. preferred
