Assists the registered nurse in the intra-operative care of the surgical patient by the performance of routine and delegated duties according to the policies and procedures of Boulder Community Hospital. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education or Formal Training 1. Graduate of a School of Surgical Technology OR 2.
Graduate of a School of Nursing with one year experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting OR 3. Former training in a military setting acceptable Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.) 1. Colorado Registration is required 2.
Certification preferred 3. BLS certification required 4. One to two years experience in an acute care setting preferred Knowledge, Skill and Ability Demonstrated physical and mental ability to apply nursing theories, procedures and standards to clinical practice Experience 1-2 years experience is required MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED 1.

Laser 2. Various carts and beds WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES 1. Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: High-pressure steam Explosive Stress Chemical Radiation Back strain Electrical Laser Body fluids Mechanical Laser plume Glutaraldehyde, etc.

The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. 5. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit. 6. The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed). 7.
Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. 8. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch. INTERRELATIONSHIPS 1.

AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Meet all requirements of Surgical Tech. 2. Proficiently scrub all complex procedures listed in Surgical Technologist job description as well. a.
Instrumented Spine b. Cranis c. Total hip (excluding techs only working weekday shifts) d.
Total Knee (excluding techs only working night and weekend shifts) e. Advanced vascular (required for techs working weekend and night shifts) f. Multisystem trauma (required for techs working weekend and night shifts) 3.
Take an active role, under the direction of the Clinical Service Lead while the Service Coordinator is on vacation/off work, ensuring instruments and equipment are available to their specialty service for use. 4. Demonstrate knowledge in the care and handling of instruments, sutures, and other operating room equipment to decrease damage and promote longer equipment life. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of principles of surgical asepsis. 6.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by preparing and passing of instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed during the operative procedure. 7. Assists the RN in the delivery of care to the intra-operative procedure. 8. Demonstrates proper handling of specimens. 9.
Consults with and/or advises appropriate personnel of instrument or equipment needs requiring follow-up or attention. 10. Utilizes physician preference cards and inventory lists to accurately organize equipment and supplies for operative surgical procedures. 11. Contributes to departmental projects and committees. 12.
Complies with all hospital policies. 13. Attends in-service programs to continually increase knowledge base and proficiency in third service. 14. Performs hall duties; i.e. room turnovers, organizing and setting up rooms and equipment. 15.
Responsible for precepting in their specialty service. 16. Interpersonal skills including meeting ENCORE values. 17. Knowledge of sterilization techniques used in the surgical suite. 18.
Participates in LEAN continuous improvement and reports needed process improvements to their service coordinator. 19. Ability to scrub all surgical procedures in their specialty and competent in all other services to meet call requirements. 20. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards. 21.
Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure. 22. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: a. the use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); b. handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; and c. hand washing as appropriate.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Flexibility to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed. Is scheduled for emergency call on nights, weekends and holidays. 2.
Maintains a work record of regular attendance, timely arrivals and departures. Provides proper notification of absences and tardiness. 3. Attends mandatory hospital and departmental meetings. 4.
Knows fire, safety and disaster procedures for work area. 5. Maintains professional appearance appropriate to position and function. 6. Participates in cost effective delivery of care. 7.
All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as the patient needs fluctuate. 8. Performs other duties as assigned.
