SWHR Assistant Director of Nursing

The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for assisting the Director of Nursing with oversight and management of nursing functions within the unit, standards compliance with State, Federal, and Joint Commission regulations, and ensuring resident safety. This role supports the overall coordination of nursing services by contributing to staffing, performance management, policy implementation, and participation in organizational planning and committees.

The Assistant Director of Nursing promotes a resident centered approach by supporting clinical care processes, advocating for residents, and ensuring a safe and respectful environment for residents and their families. Additionally, the position helps maintain staff competency, supports regulatory compliance, and assists in managing resources effectively while identifying opportunities to improve operations and the overall quality of care.

* Assists in the development and implementation of Nursing Services policies and procedures in collaboration with appropriate departments, ensuring they are effectively communicated, consistently applied, and aligned with organizational and regulatory standards. * Maintains accurate and up to date job specifications and descriptions for Nursing Services personnel. * Participates in Long Term Care planning, decision making and policy development during management meetings. * Assist the DON with the development and management of the annual budget as needed. * Supports and maintains the organizational structure of the nursing services department. * Serves on, actively participates in, and attends facility committees as appointed by the Director of Nursing. * Treats residents and their families with respect and dignity in all interactions. * Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of residents and their families. * Assists the Director of Nursing with performance evaluations, staff schedules, and annual performance reviews for nursing services personnel. * Demonstrates knowledge of geriatric resident care and evaluates licensed nurses’ ability to assess and reassess residents effectively. * Assists with the review and resolution of complaints and grievances filed within the facility. * Monitors staff absenteeism to ensure adequate nursing coverage is maintained at all times. * Ensures all personnel maintain valid licenses or certification in accordance with state regulations. * Adheres to the five medication rights and promotes practices that reduce the risk of medication errors. * Coordinates and documents employee separations when necessary in collaboration with Human Resources and the Administrator. * Delegates appropriate authority, responsibility, and accountability to nursing supervisory staff to support effective job performance. * Oversees resident assessments and ensures accurate completion and timely updates of Minimum Data Sets and care plans. * Conducts staff meetings on a regular and consistent basis. * Demonstrates engagement and professional interest in residents, families, and staff within the facility. * Advocates for the rights, needs and well being of residents within the facility. * Advocates for the rights, needs and well being of residents within the facility. * Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs. * Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified. * Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs. * Demonstrates the ability to perform tasks that meet the age-specific requirements of the persons, patients, vendors, and staff that the employee is charged to interact with as required by the position. * Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs. * Attends all mandatory education programs. * Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes. * Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements. * Cross-trains in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in the department. * Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects. * Manages resources effectively. * Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment and removes malfunctioning equipment out of service with timely reporting to the appropriate personnel. * Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.
