The Ultrasound Technician is responsible for coordinating the patient flow to obtain requested imaging studies in a fast paced environment under supervision of a certified Sonographer. This is achieved through order verification, Quality Assurance of the imaging equipment, proper patient identification and obtaining appropriate imaging following approved policies and protocols. This is to include proper patient preparation and education which may begin prior to the patient arrival.
The Ultrasound Technician may be involved in part of a procedural team. The Ultrasound Technician will treat patients of all age groups which includes infancy, pediatrics, adults and geriatrics. The Ultrasound Technician must be knowledgeable of age protocols.
The Ultrasound Technician must be flexible to cover a variety of shifts with weekend, holiday and non-restricted call duties required as needed.

- Verifies patient identification by two methods.
- Determines that the clinical indication is pertinent for the exam requested. Seeks clarification of unclear orders from the radiologist or referring physician.
- Assures that a Licensed Practitioner has ordered the exam and documents order verification for all inpatients.
- Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures requiring understanding of cross-sectional anatomy so that independent modification of technical parameters will produce optimum results.
- Adapts procedure for atypical patients.
- Selects proper technical factors, and performs pre and post-processing of images as indicated
- Makes permanent record of functional and/or anatomic and pathologic data obtained.
- Assists radiologists and other Practitioners in ultrasound-guided invasive procedures. Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross-contamination.
- Performs imaging and interventional procedures in a timely manner following department protocols.
- Uses knowledge of anatomy and pathology to adapt procedures for atypical patients.
- Utilizes optimal technical parameters to obtain maximum diagnostic information and evaluates the images for quality , adherence to department protocols, artifacts, etc.
- Conducts examination with regard to patient’s age, condition, or special requirements
- Marks images with accurate patient and anatomic information.
- Operates within the framework of existing department policies and procedures.
- Uses accepted department abbreviations for image annotations.
- Calls urgent readings to referring doctor when indicated.
- Utilizes the OB reporting program , accurately entering patient information, fetal measurements, and other pertinent data pertaining to the OB exam. Faxes or arranges to have a copy of the preliminary report faxed to the referring provider.
- Is able to access images and reports in PACS and WEB1000
- Ensures quality and continuity of patient care by proper use of the PACS system with accurate data input which includes; patient medical record number and request accession numbers.
- Ensures the cleanliness/readiness of exam rooms with the availability of emergency supplies, oxygen and suction equipment
- Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly environment.
- Knows and follows "DR STAT" and fire procedures.
- Will maintain CPR certification.
- Works with registered sonographer to improve scanning skills and increase job knowledge.
- Routinely critiques images with registered sonographer or radiologist.
- Follows EMMC Infection Control policies
- Disposes of sharps in the approved manner and location
- Reports abnormal/unsafe conditions and equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
- Applies the techniques of good body mechanics.
- Attends 75% of staff meetings and reads the minutes of unattended meetings.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the disaster plan.
- Operates within the framework of existing department policies and procedures.
- Completes all iCare modules.
- Maintains adequate records and enters required information into the computer.
- Participates in section and hospital wide patient PI/QI initiatives.
- Performs other work of the department as required. FINANCE
- Promptly performs the exam complete function in the computer to enable timely billing.
- Ensures correct FIN number is used when performing order entry into the Radnet Millennium system
- Uses supplies and equipment conscientiously, reducing waste and damage.

- Reads resource materials and seeks avenues to enhance knowledge of ultrasound
- May be asked to assist with a variety of special projects in collaboration with the department.
- Keeps abreast of new equipment, technology, techniques, etc. via continuing education to expand knowledge and enhance job performance.
- Recommends to Director of Medical Imaging or Ultrasound Coordinator new methods to improve operations.
- May be asked to present an in-service on topics for Medical Imaging Dept.
