Our main role is to receive calls (requests) from smallerhospitals about a patient they dont feel they can manage. The call is arequest for a specialist consult or transfer to a larger facility. At times thesmaller hospitals have a good idea of what they need and other times we have tocritically think and put the puzzle pieces together.

The nature of the job issporadic- it can be slow or overwhelming. Usually nurses with those backgroundsare used to that sort of work and do well with the varying needs of thedepartment. Customer service (our version of bedside manner over the phone) isalso incredibly important.
