Can be a helper or assigned patients. License required: KS or compact at the time of submission Certifications required: BLS, FHM, & NRP # of years of experience required: 2 years of L&D experience required Skills preferred: Charge experience When floating to Med/Surg and ER the L&D nurses are primarily assigned Skilled Swing Bed patients or stable Observation/Acute patients. These patients are usually there for minor things such as IV antibiotics, IV fluids, strengthening or awaiting placement in a long term facility.
These patients require the basic nursing skills of completing vital signs, completing a basic nursing assessment, managing an IV, helping the patient transfer, toileting the patient, and answering call lights. Our nurses take turns and rotate on taking ER patients and very rarely have more than one ER patient at a time. Traveling nurses are assigned low acuity ER patients that include things such as an ear infection, a minor cough, a UTI, IV fluids, or minor laceration.
If there is a trauma or critical patient that requires multiple nurses we do ask that travelers assist as a helping hand by recording events, starting IVs, taking vital signs, helping get supplies or medications. A five bed ER. This includes two main trauma bays, two regular treatment rooms, and one room used for triage and outpatients Education to the Med/Surg and ER areas are included in orientation The facility has the three departments, the hallways all meet at one central nurses station where the nurses chart and work together.
Every shift has four nurses including two nurses with the OB/ER/Med/Surg skill set and two other nurse that have the ER/Med/Surg skill set. From these four nurses, one of them is assigned as charge nurse. The charge nurse is available to assist other staff, make patient assignments, and other dedicated charge nurse duties.
