Unit Information:
Beds: 9 LDR, 2 OB OR, 2 OB PACU, 11 Level II NICU, 4 bed Peds, 20 bed Mother/Baby unit, 18 bed START unit for Perinatal Addiction, 3 OB ED Beds (20 wks. and above)
The START unit is an inpatient voluntary addiction medicine treatment program for pregnant women. Designed to support pregnant women who seek treatment for their addiction.
Minimum Years of Experience required? 1 year
Will you accept a first-time traveler? Yes
Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
Level II Perinatal Center - 32 weeks and above
Hypertension, magnesium administration, medication management for substance abuse, a high number of low-risk patients needing intermittent monitoring, epidurals, fetal monitoring, IV skillet
Antepartum care - if needing continued fetal monitoring
Post labor - stable patient and babies will transition to mother/baby. 32-34 week babies will go to NICU.
175-200 delivers in a month
Patient Ratios:
To follow AWHONN and NANN guidelines:
1:1 for active labor
1:2 for non-active laboring
Required License, National Certification, Certs:
BLS, NRP, fetal monitoring (AWHONN or Relias module)
Skills required:
Strong L&D experience - need to do cervical exams, antepartum and labor, amnio infusion, epidurals, fetal monitoring, IVs, Pitocin
Post-partum

mom and baby beyond the transition period next 24 hours. Basic breastfeeding
Experience receiving and being comfortable with couplet care once mom and baby are stable
HUGS Security system, Pyxis experience
Support within the Department:
No CNAs on the unit
Surgery Techs M-F 0600-1500 (slowly phasing them out)
Phlebotomy is available
NICU attends if 34 weeks or less and if needed
RT 24/7: will attend High-risk delivery or where strips look bad
Hospitalist: 24/7
OB Group
Laborist - OBGYN 24/7
Midwife and Family Practice Group
Telemetry monitoring:
Technology/Equipment:
EMR: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
IV pumps: Alaris
Medication dispensing: Pyxis (experience required)
Monitors:
Floating: If yes, where?
Will only float to areas where they are competent
Will not float to START unit
Traditional travelers will float between L&D and Mother/Baby
Orientation (facility and unit):
NEO
Two shifts on the unit:
Shift 1 - Patient that will deliver
Shift 2 - C-section, triage
To be completed - annual core competencies (HIPAA, OSHA, etc.), medication exam, unit competency exam (before arrival)
Scheduling:
Weekend rotation: Every other
On call? No
Holiday Expectations: one major, one minor
Approval of RTO: to go through manager
Shift times: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
Schedule cycle: Schedule made in 3-week increments
