  • First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse Position SummaryThe First Assist Congenital Cardiac Nurse (RNFA) is a highly specialized registered nurse who provides surgical first-assist support for congenital cardiac procedures. This role requires advanced knowledge and technical skills in congenital cardiac surgeries, collaboration with the surgical team, and a commitment to exceptional patient care. The RNFA works directly under the supervision of the operating surgeon, assisting with procedures on pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects. Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Required Education and Licensure
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine.
  • Completion of an accredited RNFA program.
  • CNOR certification (preferred).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications and PALS. Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of operating room experience, with at least 1-2 years in cardiac surgery.
  • Demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery is highly preferred. Skills and Competencies
  • Proficiency in first-assist techniques and sterile field management.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to patient-centered care and clinical excellence.
  • Surgical First Assisting
  • Serve as the first assist to the surgeon during congenital cardiac surgeries, including tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis.
  • Utilize advanced surgical techniques in line with surgeon preferences and patient needs.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs and ensure the operating room environment is optimized for efficiency and safety. Preoperative and Postoperative Care
  • Collaborate in the preoperative assessment and preparation of patients for congenital cardiac procedures.
  • Support postoperative care by assisting with wound management, monitoring recovery, and providing patient education.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds to ensure continuity of care. Team Collaboration and Leadership
  • Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and operating room staff to ensure seamless surgical workflows.
  • Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and assistive techniques. May perform other duties as assigned.
