Under the supervision of the RN, the Birth Center Technician is responsible for assisting in the provision of nursing care and preparation of the patient in the Surgery Department. Serves as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons. The Birth Center Technician assists nursing in the performance of clerical duties.
RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS): Provides patient care under the direction of the surgeon and registered nurse (RN). Protects patients and team members by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. Sets up and maintains sterile field.
Prepare the surgical suite and all equipment/supplies/instruments needed for surgical procedures. Perform gowning, gloving, and draping for all surgical cases. Maintain focus and anticipate needs of physician or provider during procedures.
Perform counts in a systematic and organized manner. Perform appropriate follow up for incorrect counts. Clean operating room and equipment per established policies.
Clean and prepare surgical instruments for transportation to the decontamination area. Demonstrate competency to transport or assist in the transportation of patents per departmental procedure. Transportation of medications from the pneumatic tube and/or desk area to the RN and proper handling of medication on the sterile field.
Knowledgeable in the completion of a birth certificate and entering vaccination information in OSIS. Gather medical supplies. Answer patient call lights.
Clean rooms and bed linens. Stock supplies. Assist with some medical procedures.
Transport patients. Maintain patient confidence and protect operations by keeping information confidential. Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings.
Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods. Ensure operation of equipment by verifying preventive maintenance requirements are completed; Call for repairs when needed; Evaluate new equipment and techniques. Regular attendance and punctuality for scheduled shifts.
Appropriately adapts assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the physical, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each person served. Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education opportunities including internal and external educational offerings. Must adhere to safety protocols at all times.
Implement DRH Standards of Behavior and exhibit behaviors consistent with DRH core values. Per DRH policy, all required conditions of employment must be met and maintained including required vaccinations. This position requires respirator and fit testing.
Required testing will be performed on all team members at risk for exposure to airborne infectious diseases, droplet producing procedures, or any caustic chemicals. Performs other similar duties as assigned.
