Description

Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Technologist performs invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and radiology procedures. Position is responsible for the operation and quality assurance of film/image processing, patient monitoring and the x-ray equipment. The cardiac catheterization/electrophysiology technologist participates in the daily activities of the lab by assisting with scrub, float, monitor, and imaging technology roles.

Major Job FunctionsThe following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:Provides and ensures quality care for patients as indicated by their clinical condition by meeting the needs of high-risk cardiac, electrophysiology, and radiology patients by explaining, educating, and reassuring the patients throughout the procedures.

Fully competent to perform all procedures within the Cardiac Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, and Special Procedures section of invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and radiology procedures. Assesses the patient, reviews chart for orders and lab results, loads any pertinent prior imaging and insures completion of Safety Data Sheet and communicates with the Interventionalist as to the availability of all the above.

Prepares patient for procedure by answering questions within scope of practice; directs other questions to Interventionalist. Performs in the scrub role setting up sterile field and assists physician during procedures. Assists with pacemaker, AICD, and intraventricular device implants.

Assists with right heart, ventricular and atrial fibrillation ablations. Performs in the monitor role by observing and documenting hemodynamic, EKG, and pressure waveforms; records information related to equipment use, procedural occurrences, and complications that occur during the case; ensures that time-outs occur prior to beginning procedures. Serves as a liaison between the floor nurse and the cardiac cath/electrophysiology lab personnel by reporting the patient follow-up care post cath orders and any procedural complications.

Assists in emergencies by initiating and/or assisting in procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation of life threatening arrhythmias and maintaining proper documentation of emergencies. Provides a safe environment to include but not limited to radiation exposure, contrast administration, and infection control guidelines/Universal Precautions for the Cath Lab, EP Lab, and the Health System. Participates in the ongoing cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs quality control program, preventive maintenance, and performance improvement programs.

Serves as lead worker after proficiency in skill assessment documented and serves as preceptor for new employee orientation. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development of the younger to older adult; understands the range of treatment based on the patient’s developmental needs. Other duties as assignedMinimum QualificationsThe following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:Education and Formal Training: Completion of radiologic technology and cardiovascular technology program with current certification in ARRT and/or RCIS requiredCardiovascular Interventional (CV) or Vascular Interventional (VI) registry required.

Experience with invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and radiology procedures preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Ability to assess patient needs correctly and take appropriate action. Thorough knowledge of medications, emergency procedures and medical equipment. Can initiate appropriate emergency actions within scope of practice and law.

Ability to work with personnel of varied training/backgrounds, i.e. rad. Tech, nurse, cardiovascular tech, etc. Good oral and written communication skills.

Maintains composure during high stress situations. Knowledge of and ability to operate x-ray and patient monitoring equipment. Physical

Hearing, speaking and visual acuityMotor coordination and manual dexterity. Work requires moving of equipment and patients, and exposure to ionizing radiation. Ability to lift 100 lbs with frequent lift/carry objects up to 50 lbs.

Wears lead lined apron for extended periods of time. May be subject to occupational exposure including skin, eye, mucous membrane or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material during patient contact.
