Under limited supervision, the Cardiovascular Technician provides technical support for cardiac device services and assists with a broad range of clinical and administrative activities for cardiology outpatients under the direction of a licensed physician or advanced practice provider. The role collaborates with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and requires competence in the interrogation, testing, and programming of cardiac pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.
Reports to: Practice Manager FLSA: Non-exempt Job Requirements Minimum Education Completion of cardiac device technology program and or test – Required by the end of the third year of employment.
Requires critical thinking, sound clinical judgment, effective communication, and the ability to work independently within established protocols. Must be able to recognize changes in patient condition, respond appropriately in a fast-paced clinical environment, and accurately document device findings and patient care. Must demonstrate or develop proficiency in cardiac rhythm recognition, EKG acquisition, cardiac device interrogation, programming support, and transmission review.
BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) - Required to be obtained within 90 days of employment, if not current upon hire. Certified Cardiac Device Specialist or comparable cardiac rhythm management credential - Preferred. Licenses: Certified Cardiac Device Technician preferred.
Minimum Work Experience One year of experience in cardiac patient care, cardiovascular technology, or a related cardiology setting - Required. Experience with pacemaker and defibrillator interrogation, programming, and interpretation is preferred. Experience with EKGs, treadmill stress testing, anticoagulation management, amiodarone monitoring, IV medication administration, or nursing diuretic protocols is also preferred.
Given specialized training and on-the-job experience, the incumbent is expected to become proficient in the basic responsibilities of the position within three months and in additional assigned cardiology workflows within one year.
Performs in-office and remote cardiac device evaluations, including interrogation of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and related rhythm management devices within the authorized scope of practice. Reviews device data, identifies findings that require clinical follow-up, documents results accurately, and communicates concerns promptly to the supervising physician or advanced practice provider. Provides patient education regarding device monitoring, follow-up schedules, remote transmissions, symptoms to report, and other care instructions approved by the clinical team.
Coordinates with providers, clinical staff, device manufacturers, and outside agencies to support continuity of care and timely resolution of device-related concerns. Maintains equipment and supplies, follows safety and infection-prevention standards, performs appropriate quality checks, and troubleshoots or reports equipment concerns as needed. Supports scheduling, record management, prior authorization, and other administrative duties associated with cardiac device services and outpatient cardiology care.
