MaineHealth Maine Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Service Line is seeking a highly experienced, full-time Intensivist with extensive expertise in both Cardiac Medical Intensive Care and Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive critical care management for patients with complex cardiovascular conditions and advanced circulatory support needs. Position Overview The Intensivist will be responsible for the management of critically ill patients in both Cardiac Medical ICUs and Cardiac Surgical ICUs, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurses, perfusionists, and allied healthcare professionals.
Candidates must demonstrate strong competency in general critical care medicine while possessing advanced expertise in the management of cardiovascular critical illness, cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, and extracorporeal life support. Required Clinical Expertise Critical Care and Cardiovascular Management Comprehensive management of critically ill patients in Cardiac Medical and Cardiac Surgical ICUs.
Expert-level proficiency in general critical care medicine. Advanced management of acute decompensated heart failure and cardiogenic shock Diagnosis and management of all forms of shock, including cardiogenic, distributive, obstructive, and mixed shock states. Post-cardiac arrest care, including targeted neurological and hemodynamic management.
Post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) management. Comprehensive postoperative cardiac surgery care. Advanced Hemodynamic Monitoring Pulmonary artery catheter insertion, interpretation, and management.
Advanced hemodynamic assessment and monitoring. Expertise in goal-directed resuscitation and shock management. Point-of-Care Ultrasound and Echocardiography Advanced proficiency in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
Experience with resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Mechanical Circulatory Support Management of all forms of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), including: VA-ECMO, VV-ECMO, Hybrid ECMO configurations. ECMO cannulation experience strongly preferred.
Management of: Impella devices, Intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), Durable and temporary ventricular assist devices (LVADs and other MCS platforms) Expertise in escalation, weaning, troubleshooting, and decannulation planning of mechanical circulatory support systems.
Board Certification in Critical Care Medicine. Additional training or significant experience in Cardiac Critical Care. Demonstrated experience in high-acuity tertiary or quaternary care centers.
Proven expertise in advanced mechanical circulatory support and ECMO programs. Experience working collaboratively with cardiothoracic surgery, advanced heart failure, interventional cardiology, and transplant teams. Key Attributes Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
Strong leadership and multidisciplinary collaboration capabilities. Commitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safety. Ability to manage complex cardiovascular critical care patients in a high-acuity environment.
This position offers the opportunity to practice at the highest level of cardiac critical care while caring for some of the most complex cardiovascular patients, including those requiring advanced mechanical circulatory support and extracorporeal life support.
