Certified Nurse Midwife

Position Type: Full-Time SECTION I: BASIC FUNCTION The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides comprehensive healthcare services to women across the lifespan, with a primary focus on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, gynecologic services, family planning, and preventive health care. The CNM independently manages low-risk pregnancies and deliveries within the scope of licensure and credentialing while collaborating with obstetricians, neonatologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality patient care.

The CNM promotes patient-centered care through education, advocacy, evidence-based practice, and shared decision-making. The position requires participation in on-call coverage, labor and delivery services, outpatient women's health services, and interdisciplinary quality improvement initiatives. SECTION II: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Education Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nurse Midwifery from an accredited program.

Licensure & Certification Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State. Current New York State Certified Nurse Midwife license. Certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.

Experience Previous experience in labor and delivery, women's health, obstetrics, or midwifery practice preferred. Hospital-based obstetrical experience preferred. Collaboration Works collaboratively with obstetricians, pediatric providers, nurses, and ancillary staff to deliver coordinated patient care. Accountability Maintains professional competence and adheres to regulatory, credentialing, and organizational requirements.

Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives. SECTION IV: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform patient care activities for extended periods. Ability to assist with patient positioning and emergency procedures.

Ability to lift, transfer, push, or pull up to 35 pounds with appropriate assistance. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to assess patient condition and respond appropriately in emergent situations. May be required to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts.

SECTION V: PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION Obstetrical Care Provide comprehensive prenatal care to low-risk obstetrical patients. Obtain medical histories and perform physical assessments. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests and laboratory studies.

Develop and implement individualized plans of care. Identify risk factors and initiate consultation or referral when indicated. Manage labor and birth for patients within the CNM scope of practice and credentialed privileges.

Perform vaginal deliveries and repair routine obstetrical lacerations within credentialed privileges. Manage postpartum care and discharge planning. Participate in obstetrical emergency response activities.

Women's Health Services Conduct annual wellness examinations. Perform gynecologic assessments and screenings. Provide contraceptive counseling and family planning services.

Diagnose and manage common gynecologic conditions within scope of practice. Educate patients regarding preventive health measures and healthy lifestyle practices. Patient Education and Counseling Provide prenatal and postpartum education.

Counsel patients on pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, nutrition, and newborn care. Support informed consent and shared decision-making. Serve as an advocate for patients and families.

Care Coordination Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, social workers, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals. Facilitate referrals to specialty providers as needed. Ensure continuity of care throughout the patient experience.

Documentation Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation within the electronic medical record. Document assessments, interventions, patient education, consultation requests, and care plans in accordance with regulatory standards. Quality and Safety Adhere to all hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.

Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives. Maintain competency in obstetrical and neonatal emergency procedures. Participate in peer review and professional development activities.

On-Call Responsibilities Participate in rotating call schedules. Respond to obstetrical emergencies and patient needs in accordance with departmental standards. Maintain availability during assigned coverage periods.

SECTION VI: WORKING CONDITIONS Hospital inpatient units, labor and delivery, postpartum units, obstetrical triage, outpatient clinics, and physician practices. Exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and emergency situations. Fast-paced environment requiring independent clinical judgment and effective prioritization.
