The Director, Organization Design & Effectiveness is a senior leader within Human Resources' organization, reporting to the Vice President of Organizational Effectiveness/Chief Learning Officer. The Director leads UCSF's Organizational Development consulting practice and manages a team of experienced Organizational Development Consultants serving executive and senior leaders across UCSF Health and UCSF Campus. As a member of the Organizational Effectiveness leadership team, the Director collaborates with peer leaders responsible for Leadership Development, Talent Management, and Agentic Leadership, along with HR Business Partners and other Human Resources Centers of Excellence, to deliver integrated talent solutions that advance UCSF's strategic priorities.
The Director, Organization Design & Effectiveness advises executive leaders on organization design, governance, operating models, workforce capability, organizational effectiveness, and large-scale transformation. Success requires the ability to quickly assess organizational systems, identify root causes, and design practical, evidence-based interventions that improve organizational performance. Beyond individual consulting engagements, the Director is responsible for recognizing enterprise-wide patterns and developing scalable organizational development frameworks, methodologies, and tools that strengthen UCSF's long-term organizational capability while integrating organizational design with leadership development, talent systems, and workforce planning.
The role exercises significant independent judgment while leading the Organizational Development consulting practice and shaping the future of enterprise organizational effectiveness. This role must be based in San Francisco and is fully on-site with your peers and team. Diagnose complex organizational and operating challenges using systems thinking, stakeholder input, workforce and operational data, and direct understanding of how work is performed. Identify root causes and recommend integrated structural, behavioral, and operational solutions rather than defaulting to a single OD intervention. Facilitate leadership alignment and decision-making on complex organizational issues. 30% Yes Organization Design & Enterprise Transformation Lead organization design and operating-model work supporting growth, restructuring, integration, and transformation.
Advise on structures, spans and layers, leadership capacity, governance, decision rights, role clarity, and accountabilities , including complex frontline and clinical operations. Connect organization design choices to patient-care operations, workforce effectiveness, quality, cost, employee experience, and performance. Lead transformation approaches that enable implementation and sustained organizational change. 15% Yes Enterprise Organization Effectiveness Capability Identify recurring organizational patterns and enterprise opportunities across engagements.
Develop scalable organization design and effectiveness frameworks, standards, methodologies, and tools. Partner across OE so organization design, leadership, talent, culture, and future-of-work capabilities operate as an integrated system. Translate proven approaches into repeatable enterprise capability. 15% Yes Team Leadership & Integrated Delivery Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team spanning transformation, organization/workforce design, culture and team dynamics, and BU-aligned OE portfolio/project leadership.
Set quality standards, allocate resources to the highest-value work, and ensure integrated delivery across specialties. Build strong clinical and operational credibility and a culture of practical, evidence-based consulting. 15% Yes Measurement, Insight & Continuous Improvement Define intended outcomes and success measures for major engagements and transformation initiatives. Evaluate impact using workforce, operational, experience, and other relevant data in partnership with OE Portfolio Management & Review and enterprise analytics resources.

Bachelor's degree in Organizational Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent experience. Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible experience in organizational development, organization design, executive consulting, and enterprise transformation within large, complex organizations. Experience leading organizational development consulting teams.
Expert knowledge of organization design, organizational effectiveness, operating models, governance, spans and layers, team effectiveness, organizational systems, and transformation. Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization. Experienced team leader with: Demonstrated success consulting with executive leaders on complex organizational challenges.
Ability to diagnose systemic issues and design customized, scalable organizational solutions. Exceptional executive presence, facilitation, consulting, and influencing skills. Strong systems thinking and analytical capability.
Experience leading enterprise transformation initiatives in highly matrixed organizations. Proven success leading and developing experienced organizational development professionals. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Master's degree or higher in a related field. Organization Development Certified Professional (ODCP) Prosci or other Change Management Certification SHRM-SCP or SPHR ICF Executive Coaching Certification Related certifications in organization design, facilitation, or systems thinking. Experience in an academic health system, healthcare delivery organization, or comparably complex frontline-intensive and highly regulated operating environment.
