The Hospital Chaplain provides spiritual, emotional, and pastoral support to patients, families, and coworkers during times of illness, crisis, loss, and stress. As a member of the interdisciplinary care team, the Chaplain ministers to people of all faith traditions and belief systems while supporting Mercy's mission, values, and service standards. Key Responsibilities Assess and respond to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, families, and coworkers.
Provide support during crisis situations, serious illness, trauma, and end-of-life care. Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other care team members. Assist visiting clergy and connect patients with spiritual resources as needed.
Document pastoral care services and maintain confidentiality. Foster an environment of compassion, dignity, religious freedom, and respect for all beliefs. Participate in departmental initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and ongoing professional development.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Theology, Ministry, Divinity, or related field; or equivalent education and experience. One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent experience (completion required within one year of hire if hired under the equivalency provision). Experience providing pastoral care or visiting the sick in a ministry setting.
Endorsed or eligible for endorsement by a recognized faith community. Preferred: Graduate-level coursework in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or related field. Two or more units of CPE.
Healthcare or military chaplaincy experience. This role requires a compassionate individual who can provide spiritual comfort, emotional support, and pastoral presence while helping patients, families, and coworkers navigate some of life's most challenging moments. Why Mercy?
