Lab Scientist - Certified

Summary Medical Lab Technician/Clinical Lab Technician (MLT / CLT) The Certified Medical Lab Technician is responsible for accurately performing medical laboratory tests following established laboratory policies and procedures; adhering to performance and quality standards. Responsible for clinical instrument maintenance. Responsible for training of other laboratory co-workers.

Participates in the overall functioning of the clinical laboratory, participating on committees and projects. Responsible for keeping the laboratory in continuous readiness for inspection. Possesses knowledge of techniques, instruments, and the basic medical sciences.

Responsible for the consequences of his/her own decisions. Medical Lab Scientist/Clinical Lab Scientist (MLS / CLS) In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Certified Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for new test and instrumentation development. Lab Scientists can assume leadership or member roles on committees and projects and is capable of supervising others.

Qualifications Medical Lab Technician/Clinical Lab Technician Associate's degree with Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Lab Technician (ASCP or NCA) Must have certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician (ASCP, NCA or AMT). Must have visual acuity and color discrimination. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Medical Lab Scientist /Clinical Lab Scientist Bachelor of Science required. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Clinical Laboratory Science program preferred.

(In some exceptions, individuals have taken an alternative route, and have become Certified Medical Lab Scientists with an associate degree. These exceptions should be carefully evaluated and approved by the Director of Laboratories.) Must be a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist (certification by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology, the National Credentialing Agency, the American Medical Technologists, or the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts).

OR, may be certified as a Microbiologist (M) by the ASCP or NCA (Microbiology department only). Must have visual acuity and color discrimination. Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
