The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for the performance of a variety of testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease under the professional direction of a qualified Medical Technologist or other certified Laboratory Scientist as defined by appropriate regulations(s). He/she must have an understanding of the technical aspect of all diagnostic procedures being performed, including the steps to take for unacceptable test/quality control performance and results.
The MLT has direct patient contact if performing phlebotomy, pediatric sweat chloride testing, bone marrow assistance and/or therapeutic phlebotomy procedures. The scope of care may include the testing performed on neonate, child, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patients. The MLT supports the Laboratory’s Performance Improvement Programs to ensure services exceed quality and customer service standards.
The responsibility of supporting a self-directed laboratory team concept is demonstrated by having a positive attitude, willing to give and accept constructive criticism, always maintaining a high-quality work standard and willing to accept other duties as assigned.
Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved by the Health Education and Welfare Academic and Sciences Program prior to 1980 or the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as of 1980; or Meet the CLIA Standard; Testing personnel qualification 42CFR493.1423 for moderate complexity testing and 42CFR493.1489 for high complexity testing. Certification by the ASCP, AMT, or other organization deemed comparable is not required but preferred.
