Nuclear Medicine Technologist Supervisor

• The Nuclear Medicine Technologist Supervisor is licensed in all scopes of practice as defined by the State of California Radiologic Health branch and performs routine to complex diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures using radiopharmaceuticals to assist in diagnosis and/or treatment in both the inpatient and outpatient environment. The technologist must be able to work safely in an acute care setting and be able to interact accordingly with anesthesia and/or other patient care departments that visit the Nuclear Medicine environment. Collects, prepares and analyzes biologic specimens and prepares data for interpretation. Responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures on all Nuclear Medicine equipment as required by the department. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist Supervisor responsibilities can include, yet are not limited to the following: Management of all technologists and ancillary support staff under their direct supervision. Organization of workflow, coordination of daily work schedules and shift coverage. Knowledge of all procedures and equipment; maintenance of documentation. Productivity of the department and staff. Orientation and training of assigned staff, students, residents, and faculty. Strong leadership skills and ability to effectively communicate with staff, other departments and physicians. Responsibilities % of time Essential Function (Yes/No) Key Responsibilities (To be completed by Supervisor) 55 Yes LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISION Supervises employees in their daily work assignments: Monitors and ensures equitable distribution of workload and work assignments for employees. Responsible for training of staff; maintains appropriate documentation for instruction, equipment orientation and department competencies. Coaches and instructs the technologist as necessary in correct performance of department procedures, image quality, patient positioning and proper use of equipment. Encourages teamwork and cooperation; facilitates a positive work environment. Responsible for the workflow in the department: Organizes the schedule according to the degree of urgency and or acuity level. Maintains patient waiting times to a minimum by exercising appropriate planning and organization to achieve maximum utilization of resources that are assigned. Maintains flexibility in the daily routine in order to handle the unexpected problem. Monitors the schedules and maintains adequate staffing. Follows procedures from one shift to another for coverage of sick and tardiness. Assigns lunch and break relief. Working supervisor assists with procedures and patient care: Demonstrates expertise on all nuclear medicine equipment in the department. Current on all procedures; monitors quality of exams performed and makes adjustments when needed. Maintains equipment, troubleshoots problems as needed. Coordinates patient examinations that have special circumstances and/or multiple examinations that have to interface with other radiology sections or departments. Responds to inquiries and/or requests; communicates information to coordinate and/or facilitate the department’s services. Facilitates patient transport. Responds appropriately to complaints and/or issues from both internal and external customers, to include patients and other sections or departments. Integration of Everyday PRIDE service standards for staff communication and behavior: Participates in the recruitment and onboarding process for new employees. Completes written performance appraisals in a timely manner. Reviews and evaluates job performances on an ongoing basis, communicates job performance issues to employee and to the Chief in a timely manner. Works with the Chief to implement the disciplinary action process in a timely manner. Maintains current licenses and certifications for all technologists. 10 Yes ADHERES TO POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Utilizes proper body mechanics to ensure patient safety upon moving and/or transferring patients and equipment. Follows established radiation safety guidelines. Uses appropriate patient shielding. Follows established department and hospital guidelines for attendance and tardiness. Provides excellent customer service to patients, co-workers, physicians and other departments. Assures that work environment is clean and in compliance with infection control and environmental health and safety standards. Demonstrates competency in the Medical Center’s current Electronic Health Record and ordering systems. Demonstrates competency on the Nuclear Medicine systems. Ensures clinical data is correct and appropriate for specific procedures being requested. Verifies order in APEX prior to starting every procedure. Demonstrates competency in the Radiology PACS system and related downtime procedure. Completes all exams in the radiology computer system following the procedure. Demonstrates knowledge of the Incident Reporting System. Utilizes hospital/department computer for hospital business only and logs off computers upon completion of tasks. 5 Yes DEVELOPMENT Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional growth and practice. Attends assigned staff development activities. Participates in cross training activities when necessary. Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned. Stays current with the technical changes in the field of Nuclear Medicine and Radiology by attending professional meetings, seminars or by participating in other learning activities related to the field. Complies with the department expectations and standards. Complies with current ARRT, NMTCB and CA state accreditation regulations related to continuing education (CE) requirements. 5 Yes PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT Assures that the performance and documentation of the Daily, Monthly, or Annual Quality Control tests are complete and accurate. Reports any non-compliance to the appropriate resource. Participates in clinical and research protocol development, maintenance, improvement and implementation. Ensures that appropriate documentation occurs and reporting of incidents in a timely manner regarding patients, employees and physicians. This includes patient and employee injuries. Participates in and encourages staff participation in the department’s Performance Improvement activities. 10 Yes BUDGETARY Responsible for maintaining adequate level of supplies in the department. Orders supplies when necessary. Responsible for knowledge and compliance with the budget and staffing standards. Processes invoices and maintains payment records for the department. Identifies opportunities for cost containment. Communicates any suggestions to increase productivity or quality of work. Assures patient information and billing codes are appropriate. • Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on radiology modality techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve services.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment.
• Applied background in nuclear medicine and associated modalities. Knowledge of principles, protocols, terms and concepts. Skill operating imaging equipment.
• Ability to assist with personnel management issues, such as performance reviews, disciplinary actions, etc.
• Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with staff, patients and other medical personnel.
• Knowledge of relevant regulatory agency standards.
• Proven ability to supervise and coordinate activities of subordinate staff, establish priorities and delegate work assignments.
• Solid communication skills both written and verbal. Demonstrated ability to listen actively and counsel and work in a collaborative manner.
• Computer proficiency and competency in MS Word and Excel. Knowledge of electronic medical / health records. Preferred:
• Two to three years of supervisory experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes.
