The Phlebotomist – Laboratory Specimen Collection is responsible for the accurate and timely collection, identification, labeling, processing, and distribution of blood, urine, and other biological specimens. This position ensures specimens are collected and handled according to established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and infection-control requirements while providing accurate information regarding specimen requirements and testing procedures.
The Phlebotomist supports efficient laboratory operations through proper documentation, effective communication, quality practices, and excellent patient and customer service. DUTIES: Collects blood and other biological specimens as ordered, following established procedures and demonstrating competency in age-specific collection techniques. Accurately identifies, labels, receives, documents, and processes specimens in the Laboratory Information System (LIS), including required collection and specimen comments.
Follows established standards for blood culture collection, specimen integrity, patient identification, transportation, and preparation of specimens for internal testing or shipment to reference laboratories. Adheres to universal precautions, infection-control practices, and safety requirements, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and collection devices. Maintains established productivity standards while supporting clerical and laboratory functions, including answering telephone inquiries and providing information regarding specimen requirements, testing procedures, and expected turnaround times.
Maintains an organized and properly stocked work area and collection cart, monitors supplies, and promptly reports shortages, equipment concerns, or operational issues. Completes required departmental documentation, logs, and records, including line draws, re-sticks, cleaning logs, and other specimen collection documentation. Communicates pending or delayed specimens and other relevant information during shift transitions, provides professional customer service, collaborates with coworkers, and participates in departmental Quality Management and Performance Improvement activities.

- Completed Course or Program in/as Phlebotomy Program Preferred
