OverviewUnder the general supervision of the Business Manager and the Director of Practice Operations, provides direct nursing care for assigned patients at Pediatric Subspecialty, Bay Parkway Faculty Practice.

Collaborates with providers, patients and their families, as well as other members of the health care team to formulate a plan of care and perform the duties of a registered nurse. ResponsibilitiesA. ASSESSMENTAssessment, intervention, evaluation and health education are delivered within a knowledge framework of the growth and development stage appropriate to the patient.

Initial observation and assessment of the patient's needs for immediate nursing action via telephone or walk-in triage. Assesses and intervenes appropriately to meet patient & families developmental, psychosocial, educational and home care needs. Plans and implements appropriate teaching about disease plan of treatment, side effects, diagnostic tests and psychosocial issues.

B. DIRECT PATIENT CARE Gives comprehensive patient care inclusive of but not limited to: immunizations, P. P.

D.’s, medications, various injections, height and weight, head circumference, venipuncture, and repeat PKU’s, allergy readings and other additional requirements requested by the provider. Collaborates with all members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Utilizes patient care standards in clinical practice, incorporating regulatory requirements D.

O. H. and JCAHO standards. Maintains departmental reports and records and collects statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes i.e.

Citywide Immunization Registry entries and follow-ups. Acts as liaison between the Pediatric Center D. O.

H., Early Childhood Intervention Centers, and multiple school districts. (school forms, W. I.

C. forms etc.) Develops educational material for patients and families in multicultural languages. Initiates and follows through with patient and family teaching appropriate to the level of understanding and language of the family/patient. Initiates referrals to appropriate health professionals, home care services and/or community services as needed.

Seeks clarification of authorized prescribed orders, protocols or standards that are unclear or inappropriate for age/population. Interprets clinical data and laboratory findings and notifies the physician promptly if immediate changes in management may be indicated. Documents findings and dispositions in the electronic medical record.

Assesses and coordinates patient pain management. C. EMERGENCY MEASURESRecognizes impending respiratory or cardiac failure and institutes appropriate measures of initiating CPR and calling 911 in an outpatient setting.

D. SAFETYChecks to ensure that emergency equipment is on hand and in good working order. Recognizes and reports malfunction or failure of equipment used to Biomedical Engineering; takes appropriate action to replace such equipment.

E. PEDIATRIC NURSING SKILLSCompetent nursing skills appropriate for age/population specific growth and developmental stages, and clinically carry out interventions within the developmental framework. F.

INDIRECT PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES Applies principles of infection control and safety. Incorporates the family into patient care; is proficient in teaching parents regarding specific care aspects of their child. Assists in the orientation of new personnel.

Delegates tasks and provides clinical supervision of L. P. N.’s/Medical Assistants/PCT QualificationsEducation:Graduation from accredited school of Nursing; BSN preferred.

Current NYS licensure as RN. Current BCLS certification required; PALS certification preferred. ExperienceAt least 1 year of nursing experience in field of Pediatrics preferred.

Proven clinical and technical skills required for Pediatric and adult nursing practice. Ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs of the pediatric and adult population. Good oral and written communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills. Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position; knowledge of a second language helpful.
