The Speech Pathologist Per Diem (SP PD) reports to the Clinical Supervisor and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The SP PD works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The SP PD with specific pediatric competencies may also work with infants, children and/or adolescents.
Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the SP PD plans and administers a full range of speech therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using speech language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech language pathology scope of practice.
The SP PD maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the SP PD may also supervise support personnel including Rehabilitation Aides. Performs Speech Language Pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed physician or dentist and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice and speech-language tests to determine a patient’s functional limitations. B. Establishes short and long term therapeutic intervention goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring practitioner.
C. Develops a therapeutic intervention plan based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic intervention programs according to the patient's progress and performance.
D. Administers direct patient care, utilizing the all aspects of Speech Language Pathology as outlined in the Series Concept. E.
Delegates and supervises any part of a patient's therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff, student interns and clinical fellows. F. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
G. Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as required including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third-party payer reports (e.g. CCS, Medicare, Medi-Cal forms).
H. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers, and other hospital personnel. I.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Masters degree with clinical fellowship and minimum of 1 year of related patient care experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. Ability to recognize signs of distress. Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication. Possession of effective interpersonal, time-management, self-initiation and problem-solving skills. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION Prior speech language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment. Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team. Prior experience working with complex neurologic populations.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California. AHA BLS CPR
