Senior Speech-Language Pathologist – RWJBarnabas Health At RWJBarnabas Health, Senior Speech-Language Pathologists play an essential role in providing advanced clinical care while supporting the communication, cognition, swallowing, and overall quality of life of patients across the lifespan. As a senior member of our rehabilitation team, you will provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, and care to patients with disorders related to articulation, fluency, language, voice, cognition, communication, and swallowing, with services tailored to the age and clinical needs of each patient, including neonates, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. In addition to providing direct patient care, you will serve as a clinical resource for colleagues, students, and staff; contribute to education and competency development; participate in quality improvement initiatives; and support specialty-specific clinical programs. Working collaboratively with patients, families, physicians, nursing personnel, rehabilitation professionals, and interdisciplinary team members, you will help develop individualized plans of care that promote functional outcomes and patient independence. A typical day for a Senior Speech-Language Pathologist may include:
• Conducting comprehensive speech-language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing evaluations, re-evaluations, screenings, and diagnostic assessments to identify areas of impairment and determine appropriate treatment needs.
• Selecting and administering appropriate examination techniques, standardized assessments, diagnostic tools, and procedures based on the patient's age, diagnosis, clinical presentation, and functional needs.
• Developing objective, measurable, individualized goals and comprehensive plans of care based on evaluation findings, clinical judgment, patient needs, and established department guidelines.
• Providing skilled, evidence-based treatment interventions for patients with articulation, fluency, language, voice, cognitive-communication, speech, and swallowing disorders across neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, as applicable to the clinical setting.
• Modifying treatment interventions, goals, and plans of care based on patient response, clinical findings, progress, and ongoing re-evaluation.
• Screening patients to determine whether they may benefit from speech-language pathology services and making appropriate recommendations for additional or alternative services when needs fall outside the scope of the discipline.
• Developing appropriate home therapy and carryover programs and providing patients, families, and caregivers with education regarding therapeutic strategies, compensatory techniques, safety recommendations, and continued care.
• Collaborating with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers, rehabilitation professionals, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
• Identifying and addressing the educational needs of patients and family members to support understanding of diagnoses, treatment recommendations, home programs, and functional strategies.
• Completing timely, accurate, thorough, and concise clinical documentation, including evaluations, treatment notes, progress documentation, discharge recommendations, patient responses, and other required medical records in accordance with hospital and department standards.
• Accurately entering patient charges on the day of service and submitting required statistical and clinical information in a timely manner.
• Maintaining productivity in accordance with established department standards while providing high-quality, patient-centered care.
• Supervising Speech-Language Pathology students and Clinical Fellows, when applicable, by tailoring supervision to individual learning needs, providing constructive feedback, clarifying expectations, completing required evaluations, and communicating regularly with the Speech Supervisor.
• Providing direct supervision of clinical assistants in accordance with ASHA guidelines, organizational policies, and applicable professional standards.
• Arranging appropriate student observation experiences and student coverage when necessary.
• Participating in the maintenance and evaluation of departmental equipment, treatment materials, and supplies and making recommendations regarding department needs.
• Completing all required hospital and department orientations, trainings, competencies, continuing education, and professional development activities.
• Providing ongoing education to peers and participating in training programs for rehabilitation staff, medical center personnel, nursing staff, community groups, and professional organizations.
• Providing or coordinating specialty-specific in-services for rehabilitation and/or medical center staff at least annually.
• Developing and presenting a specialty-specific competency for rehabilitation and/or nursing staff on an annual basis.
• Providing orientation and ongoing training related to specialty-specific interventions and clinical practices.
• Obtaining at least 6 contact hours of continuing education annually in the designated specialty area.
• Participating in quality improvement initiatives, which may include performance improvement, program development, clinical practice initiatives, and interdisciplinary projects related to the specialty area.
• Participating in individual and/or group education in coordination with rehabilitation leadership and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Communicating effectively with members of the interdisciplinary team and actively participating in the supervisory process by providing information regarding patient status, projects, clinical responsibilities, and operational needs.
• Seeking appropriate supervision, accepting constructive feedback, and demonstrating a proactive, collaborative, and solution-focused approach to clinical and operational issues.
• Performing additional senior-level clinical, administrative, educational, program development, or specialty-specific responsibilities as requested by the Department Director.

Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program •

• Current and unrestricted New Jersey Speech
• Language Pathology license or applicable Temporary License issued by the State of New Jersey. • Certification: Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech
• Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech
• Language
• Hearing Association (ASHA), or an approved plan for completion of the Clinical Fellowship (CFY), as applicable. Current BLS Provider CPR certification required. •

Previous clinical experience in medical, rehabilitation, pediatric, outpatient, inpatient, or other healthcare speech-language pathology settings is preferred. Experience appropriate to the designated specialty area and demonstrated ability to function in a senior or clinical leadership capacity is preferred. • Leadership and Education
