Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist - Cath Lab

Provide direct patient care and assist physicians in performing invasive and specialized cardiac procedures within the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and/or Electrophysiology Laboratory. Possess the knowledge and skills necessary to manage patient care in a competent manner as outlined below. Demonstrate the ability to collaborate with the healthcare team to provide quality care in the procedural area.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education and/or Formal Training Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.) 1. ARRT and/or RCIS and/or RN licensure in good standing. 2. BLS required within the conditional period 3.

ACLS required within the conditional period 4. RCES and/or CEPS preferred for EP Experience Minimum of one year experience in an Acute Care setting required and one year Cardiac Cath Lab and/or Electrophysiology Lab experience preferred. Knowledge, Skill and Ability 1.

Demonstrate ability to work in a multifunctional team environment and set priorities. 2. Independent, self motivated and able to prioritize multiple critical duties. 3. Perform well in stressful situations under the direction of physicians and co-workers. 4.

Ability to anticipate physician and patient needs as well as quickly assess situation and prioritize next steps. 5. Demonstrate proficiency and understanding in scrubbing highly specialized procedures and equipment including but not limited to: LHC, RHC, PTCA, BMS, DES, IVUS, Angiojet, Cutting Balloon, IABP, Rotoblater, Impella, Pericardiocentesis; Permanent Pacemaker, ICD, CRT and CRT-D 6. Fluoroscopic equipment operation and trouble shooting. 7.

Demonstrate knowledge of the different radiographic injection techniques. 8. Demonstrate understanding of equipment and positioning for patient imaging. 9. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of all supplies used so that can anticipate what catheters, wires and other equipment would be best for any given situation and anatomy. 10.

Demonstrates competency caring for critically unstable patients experiencing STEMI, cardiogenic shock, respiratory compromise, arrhythmias, hemodynamic instability, tamponade, hemorrhage, etc. This includes: a. Prepping and manipulation of equipment used in these emergent situations. b.

Direct arterial/central venous/pulmonary pressure monitoring, CO/CI calculations. c. Transcutaneous and/or transvenous pacing, cardioversion and defibrillation. 11. EP employees must demonstrate competency and understanding of highly specialized EP procedures and equipment, including but not limited to: Biplane x-ray, Cryo ablation, RF Transseptal puncture, RF ablation, cardiac stimulation protocols; interpretation of intracardiac electrocardiograms, 12 lead analysis, 3D electro anatomical mapping and anesthesia assist. 12.

Demonstrates competency and understanding of cardiac calculations such as Fick, CO, valve areas, shunts, saturations, etc. 13. Demonstrates competency and understanding of sheath removal and achievement of hemostasis utilizing manual and mechanical compression as well as closure devices for both radial and femoral access sites 14. Demonstrates competency with departmental Point of Care testing such as ACT and oxygen saturations. 15.

Demonstrates solid understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology. 16. Demonstrates competency and understanding of sterile technique and AORN standards. 17. Demonstrates physical and mental health to apply Interventional Cardiology theories, procedures and standards to clinical practice MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED 1.

Includes all standard hospital medical equipment used in the department. 2. All specialized Interventional Cardiology equipment referenced above. 3. All patient physiologic and hemodynamic monitoring systems. 4.

Fluoroscopic equipment and associated image processing and storage systems. 5. Computer systems involved in procedure report generation and hospital EMR. WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES 1.

Labs operate Monday through Friday with variable end times, dependent upon patient acuity. After hours, weekends and holiday coverage provided by Restricted Call Team. 2. Physical working environment exposures may include, but not limited to any of the following: chemical, electrical, mechanical, radiation, medical gases, body fluids, biowaste, stress and back strain. 3.

Must be able to frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds, and occasionally support, push, pull and/or lift up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a table, or transferring from a table to a bed); stand for long periods of time and twist. 4. Must be able to transport patients and/or specimens and any accompanying equipment to the appropriate department. 5. Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching, related to wire handling skills and catheter exchanges, etc. 6.

The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, and touch. 7. Environmental conditions include, but are not limited to, variations in temperature, noise and multiple stimuli. Shares formal/informal information regarding both new data and new techniques with co-workers through participation in in-services and staff meetings SUPERVISORY DUTIES 1. Function as preceptor to students and new employees 2. Coordinate with other hospital departments and staff independently during after hours cases. 3.

Troubleshoot and make decisions independently during after hours cases. 4. Participation and formation of department Call Schedule.

AND RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care 1. Provide patient care in conformance with current recognized practice, procedures, policies and established standards of care. 2. Enhance the quality and timeliness of patient care by working cooperatively with other personnel 3.

Review all pre-procedural tests to assure patient safety. Incomplete or unusual findings are reported to cardiologist and documented prior to procedure. 4. Monitor patient conditions continuously for immediate recognition, interpretation and management. 5.

Provide post procedural care and maintenance of arterial and/or venous hemostasis until patient is transferred to the next level of care. 6. Assist in recovery patient per hospital policy. 7. Calibrate, adjust, maintain and operate equipment as necessary to ensure the safe and accurate administration of tests and procedures.

Monitor equipment and report any malfunction 8. Responsible for keeping all licenses and certifications up to date. 9. Stay informed of all new equipment brought in the Cath Lab and/or Electrophysiology Lab and take responsibility for letting supervisor know if additional training or education needed. 10.

Responsible for covering after hours on call shifts as necessary, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.. Must be able to meet Restricted On Call response time as defined by the hospital. 11. Responsible for communicating schedule and flow updates with supervisor and team. 12.

Responsible for stocking and notifying appropriate staff if items need to be re-ordered. 13. Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and procedures. 14. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including National Patient Safety Goals and Joint Commission Standards. 15.

Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure. 16. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: a. The use
