BCH is known across Colorado for its clinical excellence in heart care, orthopedics, cancer care, surgery, primary care, emergency and trauma, urgent care, stroke care and neurology. Some 540 physicians in 54 medical specialties have privileges at BCH.

A staff chaplain is responsible for providing spiritual care to patients, family members and hospital staff. Provides coverage to various hospital units at the direction of the Coordinator of Pastoral Care. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education or Formal Training Master of Divinity degree or Master degree in Theology or Religion or equivalent preferred.

Minimum of two Units of Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent clinical training. Chaplaincy Certification by one of the following certification associations strongly preferred: the Association of Professional Chaplains, the Association of Jewish Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education or the Spiritual Care Association. Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.) Knowledge, Skill and Ability Broad familiarity with major religious groups, their beliefs and practices especially relating to illness, dying, and death.

Appropriate knowledge in the areas of theology and the behavioral sciences. Comfortable in providing care to persons of diverse religious/spiritual backgrounds; comfortable with an interreligious and intercultural approach to spiritual care. Ability to communicate effectively on an individual level and in groups, particularly in emotionally charged situations.

Ability to perform duties with compassion, energy, openness, and flexibility. Ability to counsel and assist others by providing spiritual guidance and support. Comfortable working amidst illness and injury, in emergency and trauma situations, and with dying and death.

Ability to respect and uphold hospital policies and laws regarding confidentiality. A commitment to wellness and self care practices that encourage a culture of wellness across disciplines. Ability to demonstrate ENCORE!

Values. Experience One year experience providing spiritual care in a hospital setting is preferred. Palliative Care experience and knowledge of bioethics is preferred.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED Telephone, Computer, Printer, Fax Machine, Copy Machine, and Pager WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES Stairs, elevators, doors, movement between BCH facilities, Car/Shuttle/Walk; some out-of-hospital community resource visiting; writing, reading, speaking, carrying, lifting, walking – in all types of weather; ability to move around the hospital. INTERRELATIONSHIPS Working cooperatively with other disciplines, including clinical and non-clinical staff.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES None

AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision of Coordinator of Pastoral Care, provides spiritual and emotional support for patients, families, and hospital staff by visiting on rounds or by referral on designated hospital units. Participates in planning/discharge rounds with the interdisciplinary team on assigned units. Serves as consultant to the Palliative Care team as needed.

Responds to and provides appropriate emotional/spiritual support in trauma/crisis situations. Assists patients and families in understanding and completing Advance Directives. Has authorized access to patient medical records for assessing spiritual needs and recording interactions with patients and families.

Assists in contacting and offering hospitality to outside clergy visiting hospital patients. Offers religious services in Hospital Chapel when appropriate. Employees are expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission Standards.

Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Utilities Management, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure. Adheres to Standard Precautions as appropriate, which may include: use of protective barriers, as appropriate (e.g., gloves, masks, gowns, pocket masks, and/or safety glasses); handling and disposing of infectious waste appropriately; hand washing as appropriate.

they perform appropriately to the age of their patient/customer. Employees must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the knowledge and skills necessary to provide for the primary population of patients served in the department. Employees demonstrate the ability to alter care and patient/family education based on the age or developmental level of the patient.
