We are seeking an exceptional Clinical Administrator to provide clinical and operational leadership at Medstar Washington Hospital Center. Level I Trauma Center in Washington, DC . This is an exciting opportunity for a visible, collaborative nursing leader who will serve as a key hospital resource during off-shifts, ensuring safe patient care, effective staffing, strong clinical operations, and timely response to emerging needs across the organization.
What You’ll Do As Nursing Supervisor, you will provide shift-based leadership and oversight of clinical operations across multiple patient care areas and departments. You will: Provide clinical and administrative leadership during assigned shifts, ensuring safe, high-quality patient care across the hospital. Assess and respond to complex clinical, operational, and patient safety situations , exercising sound independent judgment.
Coordinate nursing staffing across units to ensure appropriate coverage based on patient acuity, census, and operational needs. Partner with Nurse Leaders and the Float Pool to optimize staffing resources and address unexpected staffing challenges. Monitor high-risk patients and complex clinical situations and facilitate appropriate interventions and escalation.
Support emergency preparedness and hospital response efforts , serving as a key nursing leadership resource during emergencies and unexpected events. Collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, hospital administration, and interdisciplinary teams to resolve operational and patient care concerns. Promote a strong culture of patient safety, accountability, and clinical excellence .
Round throughout the hospital to assess patient care needs, engage with patients and staff, and identify opportunities for improvement. Support patient flow by collaborating with Capacity Management, Admissions, Environmental Services, and clinical departments. Serve as a resource to nurses and clinical leaders, providing coaching, support, and guidance during challenging situations.
Support regulatory, accreditation, quality, and patient safety standards. What We’re Looking For We are seeking a confident and compassionate nursing leader who can think strategically while remaining grounded in clinical practice . The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in a complex, high-acuity environment.
Experience leading nursing operations across multiple departments or patient care areas. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to remain calm, organized, and decisive during emergencies and rapidly changing situations.
Strong understanding of patient safety, quality improvement, staffing, and regulatory requirements. A collaborative leadership style with the ability to build trust with nurses, physicians, and interdisciplinary partners. A commitment to patient-centered care and nursing excellence.
The ability to coach, influence, and support staff while maintaining accountability. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required Master’s degree in Nursing or a health-related field preferred. 3–4 years of progressive critical care nursing experience required. Nursing leadership or management experience preferred.
Current District of Columbia RN license or compact state licensure. BLS certification required. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment in complex situations.
