  • TimeJob SummaryResponsible for conducting a variety of laboratory procedures within assigned laboratory areas. This position performs analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens, requiring advanced theoretical knowledge, technical expertise, and critical thinking skills. The role is responsible for generating accurate and reliable test results, supporting workflow management, quality assurance activities, equipment maintenance, staff training, and continuous process improvement initiatives. This position works collaboratively with laboratory leadership to support organizational goals related to quality, service excellence, patient care, compliance, and operational performance. On-call responsibilities may be required.

Performs analytical testing of blood and other biological specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements. Conducts pre-analytical activities including specimen collection, specimen processing, equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory management, supply stocking, and cleaning and disinfection of laboratory equipment and work areas. Performs post-analytical activities including result verification, reporting, documentation, and technical consultation.

Completes laboratory testing and analytical procedures accurately and efficiently while maintaining established turnaround times. Participates in proficiency testing programs and ensures compliance with federal, state, accreditation, and organizational requirements. Maintains quality control programs and performs quality assurance activities to support laboratory excellence.

Assists with workflow coordination and prioritization of laboratory testing to ensure efficient operations. Provides guidance, support, and technical expertise to laboratory assistants, technicians, and other support personnel. Serves as a preceptor for new employees and students by providing orientation, training, competency assessment, and documentation.

Supports education of clinical staff regarding laboratory procedures, testing requirements, and result interpretation as appropriate. Participates in laboratory and organizational performance improvement initiatives. Evaluates new laboratory methods, technologies, and procedures and assists with data collection and special projects.

Maintains laboratory equipment and associated records in accordance with departmental procedures. Adheres to safety standards including the proper use of personal protective equipment, infection prevention practices, hazardous material handling, and hazardous waste disposal requirements. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesTechnical skills and expertise related to laboratory testing, instrumentation, procedures, and processes performed within the assigned laboratory area. Knowledge of laboratory regulations, accreditation standards, quality assurance practices, and compliance requirements. Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities while directing workflow with minimal supervision.

Ability to maintain laboratory equipment, records, documentation, and quality assessment activities. Ability to educate, train, mentor, and support new staff members and students. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, with patients, staff, partners, and customers.

Basic computer proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Ability to utilize laboratory information systems, electronic documentation systems, and other technology platforms. Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, testing procedures, and quality management principles.

Strong critical thinking, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and quality. Strong analytical, mathematical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Excellent customer service and communication skills. Ability to read, write, and follow instructions in English. Ability to effectively communicate information and make sound decisions in a clinical laboratory environment.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a fast-paced setting. Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations related to laboratory operations. Ability to safely handle infectious biological specimens, hazardous chemicals, and laboratory reagents.

Commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Knowledge of advanced laboratory techniques such as molecular testing, DNA/RNA extraction, stem cell isolation, histologic preparation, and specialized laboratory methodologies preferred. Knowledge of laboratory research methodologies, molecular assays, and advanced testing techniques preferred.

EducationBachelor's Degree required. Field of StudyBachelor's Degree in Chemical Science, Biological Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a related laboratory science field from an accredited institution required. Candidates whose degree field does not match the required field of study may qualify through applicable CLIA equivalency requirements.

Work ExperienceTwo years of clinical laboratory experience preferred. Licenses and CertificationsAdditional licensure, certification, or credentialing requirements may apply depending on the specific laboratory, specialty area, or state of employment. Additional InformationEquivalent laboratory education and experience may be considered in accordance with CLIA regulations for high-complexity testing personnel, including:Completion of at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution with qualifying laboratory science coursework.

Completion of an ABHES- or CAAHEP-accredited clinical laboratory training program. Documented laboratory training in each specialty area performing high-complexity testing. Successful completion of an official U.

S. military medical laboratory training program and qualifying laboratory experience. Individuals who qualified and served as high-complexity testing personnel in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and who have continued to do so without interruption. Additional licensure and certification requirements may apply based on department, specialty area, or state regulations.
